Air Castle of the South: WSM and the Making of Music City (Music in American Life) ReviewHavighurst has compiled a tremendous amount of information on this subject into a story which comes to life. I can't imagine any one writing a more definitive work on WSM and that era. He has succeeded, for this reader, into making WSM a living, breathing character unto itself within this story. I'm not even a huge country music fan but no matter, Havighurst's storytelling style and obvious passion for telling this story won me over early on. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. He made me feel as if I was right there in the early days of radio, watching and listening as all the early pioneers of the industry shaped the airwaves. WSM gave Nashville the moniker "Music City USA" as well as a rich tradition of music, news, and broad-based entertainment. With the rise of country music broadcasting and recording between the 1920s and '50s, WSM, Nashville, and country music became inseparable, stemming from WSM's launch of the Grand Ole Opry, popular daily shows like Noontime Neighbors, and early morning artist-driven shows such as Hank Williams on Mother's Best Flour.

Sparked by public outcry following a proposal to pull country music and the Opry from WSM-AM in 2002, Craig Havighurst scoured new and existing sources to document the station's profound effect on the character and self-image of Nashville. The Kansas City A's and the Wrong Half of the Yankees: How the Yankees Controlled Two of the Eight American League Franchises During the 1950s ReviewI grew up as a Yankee fan in the 1950s and it was obvious that this was going on. Kansas City never had a good ball club but whenever they got talent they traded the player to the Yankees for very little in return. Sometimes it was just cash. The biggest gain was when KC got Roger Maris from Cleveland and after one strong year with KC he was tradedf to the Yankees where he hit 39 home runs in 1960 and 61 in 1961. The As were essentially a farm system of the Yankees but instead of being sent down to the minors a Yankee who needed seasoning was traded to KC where he could face major leaguers including the Yankees. When the Yankees thought the player was ready they brought him back. Here are some of the Yankees that went back and forth: Norm Siebern, Bob Cerv, Irv Noren Marv Throneberry, Hector Lopez. The Yankees got Bud Daley and Bobby Shantz in addition to Maris from the KC As. Billy Martin was traded to KC but only because the Yankees thought he was a bad influence on Mantle. They didn't plan to ever bring Martin back.
Of course the Commissioner ignored the obvious as he let the iwners do whatever they wanted. I never could understand why Kansas City wuld do this. The Best Jokes Minnie Pearl Ever Told: (Plus some that she overheard) ReviewWhat a delightful book, a must buy for anyone that needs quick material to warm up a crowd or just to have a joke to share with friends. Remember, she stole them and admitted it. Minnie Pearl has a special place as an Icon of American humor. Within a few pages, you easily recall "Howdee" and a grin that grabbed you and didn't let go until you were rolling in the floor laughing at jokes and stories you had heard before and reading them you can picture her telling them wearing that famous $1.98 hat. These stories and jokes often started in Grinder's Switch but were understood from the streets of New York to the plains of Kansas.
I really can't remember all the television shows I saw her on, but she was always the same and always entertaining. Reading the jokes and the stories from her co-stars for the Grand Ole Opry brought back good memories. I especially enjoyed the chapter "Tyin' Ourselves Up in Knots". The chapter "Take Two Lawyers and Call Me in the Mornin'" takes a shot at everyone and what profession would want to be left out of a Minnie Pearl joke book?
I would recommend this book to anyone who truly enjoys a good joke and likes to share it with others.
