America: The Last Best Hope Volumes I & II Box Set ReviewThis is a great, and much needed, update of our great Nation's history. We have very little to be ashamed of in this country and Dr. Bennett brings that forth with wonderful prose throughout the book. As a teacher of US History I would strongly recommend the book to any and all.America: The Last Best Hope Volumes I & II Box Set Overview
William J. Bennett reacquaints America with its heritage in two volumes of America: The Last Best Hope.

While national test scores reveal that American students know startlingly little about their history, former U.S. Education Secretary William J. Bennett offers one of the most gripping and memorable versions of the American story in print. The two volumes of Bennett's New York Times bestselling epic, America: The Last Best Hope, cover Columbus's discovery of the New World in the fifteenth century to the fall of world communism in the twentieth. Now both volumes are available in a convenient and attractive slip case-complete with a bonus audio CD, "Remembering Ronald Reagan," featuring recollections and commentary by Jeane Kirkpatrick, Edwin Meese, and others.

Bill Bennett brings American history to life with stories such as:

the coup d'etat quelled by a pair of reading glasses
the U.S. senator nearly caned to death on the Senate floor
the presidential pardon for hundreds of Sioux warriors
one ex-president's race to finish his memoirs and the famous humorist who helped him
when Time magazine named Hitler man of the year
Eisenhower's bold actions documenting the horrors of the Holocaust
Nixon's comic opera uniforms for White House guards
Reagan's most famous example of just saying "No"

From heroism of the Revolution to the dire hours of the Civil War, from the progressive reforms of the early 1900s to the civil rights reforms of the 1960s, from the high drama of the Space Race to the gut-wrenching tension of the Cold War, Bennett slices through the cobwebs of time, memory, and prevailing cynicism to reinvigorate America with an informed patriotism.

Praise for America: The Last Best Hope

"This is the American history that Abraham Lincoln has long awaited."-Harry V. Jaffa, Crisis of the House Divided

"Bennett has a gift for choosing the pithy, revealing anecdote and for providing fresh character sketches and critical analyses of the leading figures. This is an American history that adults will find refreshing and enlightening and that younger readers will find a darn good read."-Michael Barone, US News & World Report

"A worthy and necessary book for our time."-Michael J. Lewis, Commentary

"Bennett ... has a strong sense of narrative, a flair for anecdote and a lively style. And the American story really is a remarkable one, filled with its share of brilliant leaders and tragic mistakes.Bennett brings that story to life."-Alan Wolfe, The Washington Post

"The role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important. He puts our nation's triumphs, along with its lapses, into the context of a narrative about the progress of freedom. Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America."-Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

"The importance of America: The Last Best Hope probably exceeds anything Dr. Bennett has ever written, and it is more elegantly crafted and eminently readable than any comprehensive work of history I've read in a very long time. It's silly to compare great works of history to great novels, but this book truly is a page-turner." -Brad Miner, American Compass

"This lively book acknowledges mistakes and shortcomings, yet patriotically asserts that the American experiment in democracy is still a success story."-School Library Journal

"Bill Bennett's book will stand as perhaps the most important addition to American scholarship at this, the start of the new century.... With this book Bennett offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth.-Brian Kennedy, president, The Claremont Institute

Railroads Across North America: An Illustrated History ReviewWhether an a railfan for decades or just getting into the hobby, this is a great book. Copy is informative and not overdone. Photos and graphics are outstanding. Although my interest in railroading in the Northeast, I found the collection of schedule graphics, promotional pieces, etc. very interesting and, simply, just fun to look at. I lent my copy to a few of my buddies and was happy to see they didn't glance over the pages, but were caught by photos and info. (Hats off to the graphics people). And these are former railroaders and modelers who are "rivet counters," so for the book to get their attention says something about it. A few commented on the price, and thought the book was a real bargain.Railroads Across North America: An Illustrated History OverviewFrom the first steam-powered locomotives of the early nineteenth century to the high-speed commuter trains of today, the American railroad has been a great engine powering the nations growth and industry. This book celebrates the glory and grandeur of that legacy with a lavish tour of the history of the American railroad and the culture surrounding it. Generously illustrated with vintage photographs, modern images, maps, timetables, tickets, brochures, and all manner of memorabilia, this volume offers a fascinating look at the rail industrys beginnings and development, as well as its place in American history. From the might of the major rail companies and their empires to the romance of rail travel, this is the full and fabulously colorful story of the industry that moved a nation--and stirs our imaginations to this day.

Deconstructing Obama: The Life, Loves, and Letters of America's First Postmodern President ReviewI think the two (so far) totally negative reviews (one written by someone who hasn't even read the book) are politically motivated. As someone who at one time was an Obama supporter, as well as someone who loves language, I found this a fascinating book. Cashill's thesis is that Dreams From My Father was not written by Obama but by Bill Ayers, and not just as a ghost writer, but as author. What's more, the book is not really Obama's life story but a story concocted by Ayers based on his own experiences. Cashill offers extensive evidence to support this thesis, and it's not just the language and story-line similarities between Dreams and Ayers' own book. There are many inconsistencies in Obama's life story, some of which he's recounted himself at various times.
What interested me almost as much as the exploration of the truth of Obama's life story is the way the media showed no interest in investigating any of it. They'd circled their wagons around Obama and not only didn't want to dig for the truth, they brushed off those who did by calling them kooks. As someone who works hard to get the fullest sense of the news, and both sides of issues, I am appalled (although not surprised) by the total lack of interest by the media.
The reason I gave the book four stars instead of five is that Cashill presents so much detail in support of his thesis that at times I had trouble seeing the forest for the trees. I'd heard an interview by Cashill (which is why I bought the book), and if I hadn't heard him recite the bones of this story very clearly and concisely, I think I'd have had something of a struggle to keep my eye on the main thread of the argument. I should point out also, that he did not start out to prove that Ayers was the author, in fact Cashill hadn't even considered that. It came to him slowly as the evidence added up.

Deconstructing Obama: The Life, Loves, and Letters of America's First Postmodern President OverviewDid Obama write his own books and is the story they tell true? "I've written two books," Barack Obama told a crowd of teachers in July of 2008. "I actually wrote them myself." The teachers exploded in laughter. They got the joke: lesser politicians were not bright enough to do the same. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Obama supporters pointed to the first of those two books, the 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father, as proof of Obama's superior intellect. Time magazine called Dreams "the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician." The Obama campaign machine traded on the candidate's literary reputation, encouraging volunteers to "get out the vote and keep talking to others about the genius of Barack Obama." There was just one small flaw, as writer and literary detective Jack Cashill discovered months before the November 2008 election: nothing in Obama's history suggested he was capable of writing either Dreams or his 2006 book, The Audacity of Hope. In fact, as Cashill continued his research, he came to the shocking conclusion that the real craftsman behind Dreams was terrorist emeritus Bill Ayers. "This was a charge," David Remnick admits in his definitive Obama biography, The Bridge, "that if ever proved true, or believed to be true among enough voters, could have been the end of the candidacy." Deconstructing Obama tells the story of what happens when a citizen journalist discovers a game-changing reality that the media refuse to acknowledge. Despite their rejection, Cashill expanded his research into Obama's literary canon. As he came to see, if Dreams serves as sacred text, the poem "Pop" is the Rosetta stone, the key to deciphering Obama's shrouded past, his fragile psyche, and his uniquely cryptic political life. In unlocking that past, Cashill discovered that the story that Obama has been telling all his life varies from the true story in ways big and small. In fact, much of Obama's life story appears to be a wholly constructed fabrication, one that Jack Cashill "deconstructs" to show the world just who Barack Obama really is.

The Fate of the Corps: What Became of the Lewis and Clark Explorers After the Expedition ReviewThe book contains outstanding personal histories of every individual that left a record after their return to St. Louis. Some of the amazing men include John Colter who left the corps on the return leg after three years with Lewis and Clark to turn back northwest with a small group of trappers. Like George Drouilliard, Colter spends time in the remote country in constant danger from the powerful Blackfeet. Although only one man died on the Lewis and Clark expedition, many of the men that return meet death at the hands of the Indians or natural diseases of that era. George Shannon, loses a leg in a second trip north and becomes quite successful, some like Nathaniel Pryor virtually live with the Indians (Osage) and a few live a very long life like Patrick Gass. Their lives intersect such famous mountain men such as Jedediah Smith, Hugh Glass, young Jim Bridger and the controversial Edward Rose. The author has done phenomenal research that documents all the Corps participants including the death of Sacagawea, although there is some controversy noted in the Appendix. Her husband Charbonneau lives a long life that is quite useful, in spite of Lewis' opinion, for others plying the Missouri. Of course Clark's life is well documented and known but Clark did a wonderful job keeping up with the survivors actually maintaining a log on all participants up through the late 1820's. Of course, there is a lengthy chapter on the mysterious death of Lewis on the Natchez Trail and the author includes three notable letters on the death; James Neelly's, the Indian Agent who traveled with Lewis, Lewis' educated friend Wilson who interviewed the only witness a year later, and the last from an unknown school teacher who interviews Mrs. Grinder one last time many years after. Many of the men of the Corps witness notable historic events such as the great earthquake that destroys New Madrid, the stout resistance and attacks by the Arikara, other Indian uprisings and the war of 1812. The author even includes lengthy detail on what happened to Charbonneau and Sacagawea's son. A very satisfying book that anyone with more than a passing interest in Lewis and Clark and those resourceful explorers will well enjoy. The Fate of the Corps: What Became of the Lewis and Clark Explorers After the Expedition Overview

The Organ Grinder And The Monkey ReviewInspired by the work of Sam Moffie, after reading NO MAD, I was extremely pleased to find that THE ORGAN
GRINDER AND THE MONKEY is as descriptive, and intelligent. The author is one of a kind, a master in creating unique characters, who come to life, with personalities the reader will remember. Seymour's dream is to
be a veterinarian, after he graduated college, he takes a trip to New York to fulfill his dream. Irving decides that he wants to join the New York City Police Department, after his haunting memory of being lost
on a field trip in his younger days, and being rescued by a police officer. Although Constance has a wealthy
family, the good fortunes were never shared with her. Her dream in life is to become a Rockette, but after
moving to New York City, she dances in a strip-club, where survival is the name of the game. With perfection,
the author weaves the lives of these three characters into an outrageous, humorous story in non-stop action, page-after-page. The life of each character and how they react to challenges and struggles is blended with
precision into the unfortunate of today's society as they venture out into the real woorld, and learn through
experience the difference between dreams, and reality. I highly recommend this novel to contemporary fiction
lovers, and anyone who enjoys an interesting story, packed with emotion, and humor. Sam Moffie has an
incredible imagination as he paints his creativity into an unforgettable dialogue, while the fast-paced
storytelling moves along with delight. Does Constance survive New York City? What factors in Seymour's life
left him emotionally traumatized? Do the three characters share anything in common? How did Irving's upbringing influence his attitude on the solutions to life's problems? As we read on, the author invites you
to step into a roller-coaster-ride of mixed-emotions, broken dreams, and psychological twists-and-turns
through the lives of dysfunctional personalities. The more you read, the more addicted you become to Sam Moffie's distinctive, refreshing, and hilarious voice. "THE ORGAN GRINDER AND THE MONKEY" is as entertaining as TRADING PLACES and as funny as ANALYZE THIS, with Robert De Niro, and Billy Crystal. The Organ Grinder And The Monkey OverviewSeymour Petrillo, Irving Hanhart and Constance Powers. Three private protagonists from vastly different backgrounds ultimately share a very public secret. From Steubenville, Ohio (Petrillo) to Boardman, Ohio (Powers) to Brookline, Massachusetts (Hanhart)-the three protagonists' imaginative and individual experiences are detailed. From humorous to outrageous to tragic, the reader is taken on a journey that finds an ending in New York City.
