The Annotated Wizard of Oz (Centennial Edition) ReviewThis beautiful, oversize, lavishly illustrated Centennial Edition of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a cornucopia of enjoyment for Oz fans. Edited by Oz expert Michael Patrick Hearn, it's annotated in a manner similar to Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" (Gardner contributes a preface outlining the history of the "The Annotated Wizard of Oz").
There's a hundred-page introduction, with lots of photos and color illustrations, covering Baum's life, his family, his non-Oz books, and the history of the Oz phenomenon (books, plays, musicals, movies, other Oz authors, and much more).
The story itself is reproduced from the 1900 edition. W.W. Denslow's original illustrations, including all 24 color plates, are here too. Hearn's notes are entertaining, informative and very extensive. For example, there are three double-columned pages dealing with Baum's brief one-page introduction alone!
Anyone who loves the Oz books will find countless hours of pleasure in this delightful book. It's well worth the price! The Annotated Wizard of Oz (Centennial Edition) Overview

The Emerald City of Oz (Books of Wonder) ReviewThough I loved the original Wizard of Oz, and have enjoyed all the Oz books for more than 20 years (back to when my mother first read them to me), Emerald City ranks as my all-time favorite. It's full of adventure, suspense and humor. Who could forget the ridiculous roly-poly Nomes and their quixotic plan to conquer Oz with the help of some rather bizarre allies? Or the village where every house and fence (not to mention every inhabitant) was edible? As I write this, my week-old son sleeps in my lap. I can't wait to read him this book when he's old enough to appreciate it.The Emerald City of Oz (Books of Wonder) Overview

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists ReviewA brilliant, sad and moving account of life in Edwardian England for the working class "Philanthropists" struggling through poverty in order to make their employers rich. Though starving and wretched the majority of these working men react furiously to suggestions that their poverty is caused by their "masters" robbing them of the fruits of their labours. They are referred to as philanthropists due to their generosity of spirit and material wealth , gladly handing over all the benefits of the luxuries and necessaries of life which they help to create, to their greedy paymasters and employers. The solution to their problems is provided by the author as a Socialist, Cooperative Commonwealth of Nations under God, where the marvels of modern science and technology should be harnessed, owned by the people, and producing an abundance of the comforts of civilisation, not for one company's profit but for everyone's needs. An old lesson whose truths are as relevant today as they were when this masterpiece was written. A Socialist's bible if ever their was one.The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists Overview

Mischief in the Mushroom Patch ReviewI acquired these books for my two very young nieces, ages 2 and 3, neither of which are known for sitting still for very long. However, when I started reading aloud, they were mesmerized. My voice gave out before they would allow me to stop reading. These are wonderful books from a very talented writer.Mischief in the Mushroom Patch OverviewHave you ever wondered where fairies get their fairy dust? Lilly and Boris are two mischievous young fairies who leave their home in the mushroom patch without permission.Boris has flown too fast and tumbles to the forest floor, where he injures his ankle and bends his wing. Meanwhile, the fairy dorm monitor realizes the naughty little fairies are missing and organizes a search party.Once the two are escorted safely back home, Boris is admitted into the infirmary and Lilly is put to bed. To punish them, Lilly and Boris are put to work for a few days in the fairy dust factory. The factory is an incredible place, producing more fairy dust than any other. Lilly and Boris witness the magic of fairy dust coming to life as they watch it dance and sparkle in the large storage barrels. The two learn a valuable lesson about this wonderful dust that they have always taken for granted and vow to never be so careless with it again.Author Amanda M. Thrasher dedicates this book to her late mother, Irene Mulroy. Her mother loved fairies and placed her collection throughout her house and garden. Born in England, Thrasher moved to Fort Worth, Texas, when she was 14 and still lives there. She has written other children's books and is now working on a novel.Publisher's website: www.strategicbookpublishing.com/MischiefInTheMushroomPatch.html

The Song of the Whales ReviewThe book is for children. So, I gave it to my 10 year old daughter (her reading comprehension is at a high school level though) for her thoughts on the book. After she got over the fact that she wasn't going to get paid for the review and we settled on the word review rather than report, she was fine with reading the book to review. She loves to read. Her head is always buried in a book. Her first reaction to the story was that it was kind of cliche (her word). She saw the list price on the book and commented on that also. But, here is her review in her own words:
My Review on the Songs of Whales
The book "The Songs of Whales" in my opinion is alright, but is not worth the $16.00 they're trying to sell it for. There isn't much of a plot, and is not action filled which is what I personally look for in a book. There is a little language*, and is appropriate for only kids ages ten and up. I do not advise having kids any younger read this book, unless they are very mature. I would say this book is an ok read, but not the best I've had.
* she told me the word "damn" is in the book.
