Prepare Now: A Christian Perspective on Preparing for Hard Times ReviewI have read several survival/food preparedness books in order to become better informed and to be prepared. Because face it, the more prepared you are, the better chance you have of getting through crises and recovering from them. After 9/11, I have become increasingly aware how fragile our systems really are. Living in a remote area, we are totally dependent on supplies of food being trucked in to our local grocery stores from centers at least 10 hours' drive away from us. If this system was disrupted in any way, or, if truckers went on strike, many of us would be in a precarious situation. All you have to do is watch people shop when there is an impending snowstorm. The shelves quickly get wiped out. So I made up my mind to learn how to be more proactive and self-reliant. I do so appreciate the common sense, no nonsense approace this pastor takes in writing this book. He explains through the use of scripture that it is Godly to be prepared for hard times. Yes, Jesus did say "look at the birds of the field, your Heavenly Father feeds them," and, "consider the ant." These examples from nature, and others, reveal that God put in animals an automatic response to preparing for hard times. Yes, God does feed the birds, but if you watch them, they are always working. They don't just sit in their nests and wait for food to fall from Heaven. Same goes for the ants, who automatically store food. It isn't out of fear, but of God-given instinct and self-preservation. I would go further to say that the parable of the maidens, the bridgroom, and their lamps also applies to preparing for difficult times financially as well as spiritually. Emergent situations can and do happen. I like his suggestion of having a bag assembled with helpful items in case you can't get home because of highway emergencies and whatnot. I love that he lists what foods he stores for his family of 4. He gives approximate amounts of many things he stores to give you an idea of how much of each item to store for each person and how to store it. He also tells you how long you can expect each food to last. Several food stuffs can last up to 15 years, if it is stored properly. He explains how easy it is for a family of four to have meals that cost under $2.00 per person per day. He suggests having a whole year supply for backup. However, if you are like me, you don't have the room to store that much. But it is prudent to store as much as you can of the stuff you know you can use. The numbers he gives are very helpful to plan. He also gives some recipes specific to food storage which is really really helpful. I hope he and/or his wife writes another book of recipes just for food storage. If you live in a small apartment, it would be wise to have some MRE's (meals ready-to-eat) stored which are basically dehydrated foods that just need hot water. They also take up the least room. FEMA suggests having three days' worth, but the author disagrees. He feels to have at least a month or more. I'm not at the point where I'm grinding my own wheat and baking my own bread every week. But I am more conscious of the value of the food I buy and what I can do with it. I probably will not get to the point of storing wheat berries in 45 pound containers, but I can at least plan a weekly common-sense moderately healthy menu that isn't solely reliant on making multiple trips to the grocery store in a crisis or a short-term food shortage. I am slowly incorporating more beans and rice into my menus to get used to them so we won't go into "food shock" if we have to rely solely on storage. It does take adopting a new mindset. I buy less and less convenient foods and prepare my own.Prepare Now: A Christian Perspective on Preparing for Hard Times OverviewHurricanes, Tornadoes, Flooding, Lay offs, the list goes on and on. The Human-Powered Home: Choosing Muscles Over Motors ReviewGood overview of the history of foot pedal & hand crank devices, & what is being used again today in our times. For example, foot pedal sewing machines, lathes for cutting, emergency radios, etc. Also how to generate some of your electricity needs by foot pedal power. Borrowed this from the library & then decided to buy my own copy. Plenty of references in it for further reading also. The Human-Powered Home: Choosing Muscles Over Motors Overview
"The Human-Powered Home is a level-headed book which focuses on informing and entertaining. There is no utopian hyperbole, just useful facts and anecdotes that provide the foundation necessary to take appropriate action. Dean has produced an accessible primer for novices in the area of people power as well as a book that is thorough enough to benefit even experienced tinkerers. - Joel Gillespie, Momentum Magazine

"Tamara Dean, author of The Human Powered Home, doesn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. Creating one's own power is not an easy undertaking. But it can be very energizing. The bicycle is the real hero in the book. There are photos and descriptions of dozens of jury-rigged devices, built to do everything from wash clothes to make soap to power laptops. While it's a thorough guide for confident do-it-yourselfers, the book also details how pedal and treadle power can make life-changing differences globally." - Marsha Walton, Mother Nature Network

What if I could harness this energy? An unusual question for anyone putting in a long stint on a treadmill perhaps, yet human power is a very old, practical, and empowering alternative to fossil fuels. Replacing motors with muscles can be considered a political act—an act of self-sufficiency that gains you independence.

The Human-Powered Home is a one-of-a-kind compendium of human- powered devices gathered from a unique collection of experts. Enthusiasts point to the advantages of human power:

Portable and available on-demand
Close connection to the process or product offers more control
Improved health and fitness
The satisfaction of being able to make do with what is available

This book discusses the science and history of human power and examines the common elements of human-powered devices. It offers plans for making specific devices, grouped by area of use, and features dozens of individuals who share technical details and photos of their inventions.

For those who want to apply their own ingenuity, or for those who have never heard of human-powered machines, this book is an excellent reference. For those who are beginning to understand the importance of a life of reduced dependency on fossil fuels, this book could be a catalyst for change.

Tamara Dean is a technical and environmental writer who lives in Wisconsin, where she and her partner David human-power their grain mill, blender, coffee grinder, and assorted electrical gadgets.
