Big-Time Sports in American Universities ReviewThere are plenty of books about what's wrong with college sports, often in the "ain't-it-awful" genre, and a long article in the latest Atlantic is an indictment of the way "student-athletes" are exploited. Clotfelter's book is a more balanced account: he's an economist and he gives an excellent description of just what the costs and benefits are of big-time college sports, both tangible and intangible. And the book explains how colleges got into the entertainment business in the first place and why they're not likely to leave it any time soon. He doesn't neglect the exploitation issue, and suggests various ways in which it could be fixed (but probably won't be). The challenges it poses to traditional academic values have been recognized from the start, but they have grown more ominous in recent decades, as cable television has become ubiquitous, commercial opportunities have proliferated, and athletic budgets have ballooned. Drawing on new research findings, this book takes a fresh look at the role of commercial sports in American universities. It shows that, rather than being the inconsequential student activity that universities often imply that it is, big-time sports has become a core function of the universities that engage in it. For this reason, the book takes this function seriously and presents evidence necessary for a constructive perspective about its value. Although big-time sports surely creates worrying conflicts in values, it also brings with it some surprising positive consequences.

Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet ReviewI purchased this book a few months ago, as a means of self studying for the AP Environmental Science exam. So far, this book has proved to be excellent in successfully learning the material, and emphasizes the everlasting dispute between science and values. I initially wanted to only take this test for some easy college credit; however, Environmental Science has now become a very interesting subject for me thanks to this amazing book. Through great pictures and maps, the reader can more thoroughly comprehend the material. Being a physical geography/GIS person, I wasn't sure what to expect, but soon came to love the 'regional' approach to geography. For those who don't know, 'Regional Geography' is a subdiscipline of geography that emphasizes holistic description and analysis to understand the human and environmental pieces that make up a place. The material is very relevant to current events, such as the Georgia/Russia conflict. You'll learn about the South Caspian oil fields, the Baku pipeline, and the cultural 'minorities' of Russia and the former Soviet Union that make up this fascinating region. You'll learn about past Russian political involvement in the region and the effect of Russian colonists. It's all in there! And the same goes for the entire rest of the globe -- this is the magic of Regional Geography. de Blij's approach is to attempt to define "Realms" of the world (kind of "Super-Regions" which are somehow cohesive) and organizes the book around these theorized Realms. Whether or not you agree with the definitions of realms, the technique does help with memorization, as Regional Geography has a LOT of places, dates, and names to be memorized. Content is clearly laid out and easy to understand. The graphics are first class. This is a great book for basic understanding of the workings of our atmosphere. I congratulate the author. This was my textbook for an AP Human Geography class I took at my school. The teacher was barely adequate, and I basically taught myself everything from this book. H.J. de Blij knows how to write well. He doesn't just give you facts, either. You're taught how to spacially analyze worldwide phenomena, not just to memorize place names. He covers everything from political geography to urban landscapes to environmental science.
This textbook is also great if you simply want to know more about the world we live in, and wish to learn from a more international, rather than American-centric, point of view.Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture OverviewHuman Geography gets general readers to think geographically across scale and across a wide range of geographical phenomena and global issues.
