Profilers: Leading Investigators Take You Inside The Criminal Mind ReviewCriminal psychology and profiling are my areas of biggest interest in the realm of true crime. As I have a library of over 50 books on this and related topics I certainly feel qualified to write reviews on these books.
This book is devided into two parts. The first is a collection eleven odd articles from various bulletins and law enforcement magazines. Put simply, as the book tiltles them, this is a collection of the well known Original Behavioural Science Articles on Criminal Profiling. They are written by the 'who's who' from the era often referred to as 'The Golden Age of Profilers'. For this reason alone the book is well worth 'the price of admission.'
Part two covers comtemporary articles on Criminal Profiling. The topices are wide and varied covering such topics as Forensic Linguistics, Geographic Profiling to Assaultive Eye Injury and Enucleation.
I wondered how interested I would be in Forensic Linguistics but found the chapter facinating.
I feel most readers with an interest in the topic will find part one just great. In part two, since it covers such a wide range of areas I guess it's possible the odd chapter may not appearl to all.
The other plus here is the fact the book is broken into distinct articles by the editors so you can 'peice read' or do a 'cover to cover'.
I see the book as appealing to law inforcemnet personel, people like myself who don't work in law inforcement but have to deal with perpitrators and their victims and finally all those who enjoy the topic.
If I were forced to give up my entire library and keep just one book this would nearly have to be the one.
A great book, well done to Campbell and DeNevi, the editors.Profilers: Leading Investigators Take You Inside The Criminal Mind Overview

Somebody's Daughter: The Hidden Story of America's Prostituted Children and the Battle to Save Them ReviewAs Americans, we often hear stories of teenage girls & young women being trafficked into our country from Latin America & Eastern Europe. Yet the dirty little secret is most trafficked kids in our country are American-born- our daughters.
The author, a Canadian investigative journalist exposes this in his book. We are taken into a world of the child sex trade. One victim, a Latina the author calls "Maria" is a big focus in this book. Maria, a runaway who found herself going between Las Vegas & Atlantic City risked her own life to help the Feds take down her pimp. She was lucky to eventually get out as a some of teenage girls profiled here meet a tragic end.
The book is also critical of how the legal system treats prostitutes as opposed to some the European countries, which while legalize the trade also made it illegal to sell someone else's body for sex-thus making it easy to go after pimps. Whereas in America, we still focus too much on going after the prostitutes, rather than getting the johns & pimps that use them. & let's not talk about how our pop culture glorifies pimps (remember the Oscar winning song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp"?)
That said, this is a real page turner. At times chilling, esp. the accounts on how some of these girls got abused by their pimps. This book is a must read in order to understand the truth about child trafficking within our own borders.

Clarence Darrow: Attorney for the Damned ReviewAfter days of deliberation (i.e., engrossing reading), this reader is ready to return a verdict: Judgment for the Author!
And it was by no means an easy case.
Darrow would seem a daunting, perilous task for a biographer. He was born four years before the Civil War, lived into FDR's second term, and in between was a pervasive, dominant force in almost every significant U.S criminal case and legal issue (and plenty other things that captured his boundless interest). Colorful, controversial, narcissistic, fearless, grandiose and thoroughly brilliant, he strode through the 1880-1930 legal landscape like a true Colossus, no-holds-barred, to give a powerful voice to those for whom society had already spoken, denounced and consigned to severe punishment.
He was sensational newspaper fodder, in days when newspapers were rampant but often unreliable. He and his contemporaries (virtually every American figure of note crossed paths somehow with Darrow) left extensive correspondence and writings. Everyone knew of him and had an opinion. The Scopes trial was the first to be broadcast live nationally on radio. Leopold and Loeb captivated the country--and those are just two of Darrow's more famous cases.
How to separate man from myth, fact from hyperbole, and articulate a workable understanding of what drove this remarkable figure?
Enter Farrell-a prominent investigative journalist (suitably here, neither lawyer nor academic), who seemingly leaves no stone unturned in his painstaking search for the essence of Darrow. With a writing style that is concise, cogent and fluid, Farrell succeeds in making Darrow come alive. What emerges in this fresh and colorful account is a portrait of a man both blessed with gifts and riddled with flaws, for whom almost any means--even juror bribery--justified the ends of manacling perceived injustice.
Farrell wisely lets Darrow speak his own great court arguments; the author also draws judiciously from reliable primary sources such as letters, diaries and observations by contemporaries. Farrell is respectful of earlier writers who have tackled Darrow's life in full, but points out where (and why) they missed a mark. This author also deftly weaves in outstanding secondary sources, such as treatments of specific cases. The net effect is a modest but knowing and confident author's tone--quite a feat considering the prodigious effort involved.
The requisite source notes are here, although I would have preferred more separate entries, rather than frustrating "round up" notes. Fortunately, the Bibliography is a reader's dream. Alas, my Kindle version had only limited photograph images (the Darrow Wikipedia page alone was more enlightening in this respect). Also, I found the publisher's bally-hoo of new revelations and "Free Love" lifestyles to be, well, of relatively minor stir in the grander scheme of things.
But these are minor criticisms. I hope other readers will experience the rare joy I had, of setting aside preconceptions/skepticisms about this icon, and letting Farrell completely take over the story-telling reins. It is a memorable and invigorating ride and one I highly recommend.Clarence Darrow: Attorney for the Damned OverviewDrawing on untapped archives and full of fresh revelations, here is the definitive biography of America's legendary defense attorney and progressive hero.Clarence Darrow is the lawyer every law school student dreams of being: on the side of right, loved by many women, played by Spencer Tracy in Inherit the Wind. His days-long closing arguments delivered without notes won miraculous reprieves for men doomed to hang. Darrow left a promising career as a railroad lawyer during the tumultuous Gilded Age in order to champion poor workers, blacks, and social and political outcasts against big business, Jim Crow, and corrupt officials. He became famous defending union leader Eugene Debs in the landmark Pullman Strike case and went from one headline case to the next—until he was nearly crushed by an indictment for bribing a jury. He redeemed himself in Dayton, Tennessee, defending schoolteacher John Scopes in the "Monkey Trial," cementing his place in history. Now, John A. Farrell draws on previously unpublished correspondence and memoirs to offer a candid account of Darrow's divorce, affairs, and disastrous finances; new details of his feud with his law partner, the famous poet Edgar Lee Masters; a shocking disclosure about one of his most controversial cases; and explosive revelations of shady tactics he used in his own trial for bribery. Clarence Darrow is a sweeping, surprising portrait of a legendary legal mind.

The Devil's Dozen: How Cutting-Edge Forensics Took Down 12 Notorious Serial Killers ReviewThis is a fascinating book about very cunning serial killer monsters and heroic efforts of detectives and forensic scientists working together to stop a killing machine and bring him to justice. Dr. Ramsland has carefully selected serial killers that are not household names, like "The Red Spider, who left a note in red ink near one of his victims in a brazen and brutal Christmas Eve killing and then later sent alarming notes to newspaper editors written in blood-colored ink.
Ramsland's expertise in selecting the terrifying killers is only part of the equation. These twelve cases are dramatic examples of how police and forensic experts brought these killing machines to justice. She captures the fear, excitment and revulsion of the people who are working crazy hours for days, months and even years trying to prevent these killers from killing again. Each of the twelve cases is the makings of a movie.
It's a great read, especially for audiences of CSI and the other forensics TV series. Highly recommended.
The Devil's Dozen: How Cutting-Edge Forensics Took Down 12 Notorious Serial Killers OverviewA forensics expert follows the historic evolution of CSI through a century of serial killers. "Katherine Ramsland has brilliantly captured the insights and drama of some fascinating cases" (Dr. Henry Lee) in her previous bestselling books. Now she examines the case histories of twelve of the most notorious serial killers of the last one hundred years, and answers the questions: What clues did they leave behind? How were they eventually caught? How was each twist and turn of their crimes matched by the equally compelling weapons of science and logic? From exploring the nineteenth century's earliest investigative tools to remarkable twenty-first century CSI advances, The Devil's Dozen provides a fascinating window into the world of those who kill-and those who dedicate their lives to bringing them to justice.
