Evidence Explained:Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace 2nd Edition ReviewEvidence Explained: Citing History Sources . . . is, arguably, one of the most important works that any genealogy buff should have on his/her bookshelf. Citing sources consistently and meaningfully is the single most important criteria by which a family history is judged and failure to properly document these sources not only completely invalidates many family histories (as they cannot be viewed with confidence) but is quickly recognized by others who are searching for the same ancestors. Without question, my criticisms of genealogical research have focused on the shoddy and haphazard approach that genealogists (including hobbyists) have had to use because there simply have been no standards for doing so. This is something that I've struggled with, over the past twenty years myself - I've used Richard Lackey's now very outdated "Cite your sources: a manual for documenting family histories and genealogical records" (copyright 1980) when I first published my own family history well over a decade ago and have since howled in dismay at the lack of standardization for citing sources in essentially all of the software applications created since then (RootsMagic 4 appears to be the first to address this problem in their latest program). This has caused me considerable grief whenever I've tried to update my own databases.
Evidence Explained (second edition - I don't own the first) has done an exceptional job in providing a strong starting ground for the standardization of genealogical citation practices and provides a nearly encyclopedic approach in covering the topic. While genealogical citation practices are still developing, Elizabeth Mills has created an exemplary work on the topic - this book is long, long overdue. Fortunately, she has also addressed one of the most difficult tasks that has developed over the past ten to fifteen years - the need to document electronic sources - and she has done a splendid job.
Perhaps my only criticism (so far) is that this book attempts to draw attention away from genealogy by proclaiming that is is focused on citing "history sources" - sure, genealogy should be taken seriously but it should not try to piggyback on other disciplines (such as history and the social sciences); rather, it seek recognition as it's own unique topic worthy of study. I also couldn't help but notice that the bibliography cites references to other widely used citation formats (most notably the Chicago Manual of Style and the Modern Language Association of America) but ignores one of the most widely styles used by those in the social sciences - that of the American Psychological Association. Just the same, this is not a problem but is worthy of note.
At the moment, I believe that this book is exemplary and finally provides a rock solid foundation upon which citing sources in genealogical research has desperately needed for so long. At last, genealogists have a valid model upon which to guide the most important component of creating family histories - documenting sources. The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know ReviewI am a foreign citizen living in the US for about 4 years for graduate level degree in the US. Culture as well as language are the biggest obstacles of my life in the US. I overcame the basic survival and class language barrier after living 2-3 years, but the cultural barrier with combined with conversational language is very challenging. Not only for more socializing but also more nature English writing and speacking, I worked hard, and Culturacy Dictionary helps me a lot. It includes expressions from various areas, e.g. bible, literature, idiom, etc. During the reading or watching TV, I can understand better the implications and expressions rooted from relgion, history, literature, and other areas of culture.
I use this dictionary with several ways. First, just read the page I am intersted in. Second, I consult it during my writing to find better expression, and do more research to understand the background better via internet. Third, play game with this book with my American Classmates - in fact, this helps me the most. They explain what is not written in the dictionary, and this is the way I can acquire the knowledge of the expression easily and last long in my brain.
This dictionary is wonderful, I think, for both for navtive and non-native. Non natives can upgrade their English level with cultural understanding, and natives can be more sophisticated using their languages. It is my bible to my geneological research. It covers every conceiveable catagory and helps the beginner as well as the pro on where to search out answers, where to get information on vital records, tracking through lineage organizations and individual chapters on select ethnic groups.One of the best chapters is on Tracking Urban Ancestors for those of us who are tracking relations who lived in big cities. The Flavor Bible: The Essential Guide to Culinary Creativity, Based on the Wisdom of America's Most Imaginative Chefs ReviewI recently added this book to my cookbook collection, which numbers more than 1,000 volumes (probably more like 1200 but I'm still cataloging). It has immediately become one of my favorites (and definitely my #1 favorite in English). If you are a serious cook, love to read cookbooks like novels, and view recipes as suggestions rather than as requiring strict adherence to precise measurements, then this is the book for you! (Did I say I LOVE this book?)
I make all of the desserts for my husband's restaurant. If I snag some particularly luscious fruit and want to make it into a dessert, this is the book I reach for first. I don't WANT to be told how to make a fruit sorbet. I already know how. But I love having a list of suggested flavors and products that go with what I already have. It's like having an uber-creative friend at your side saying "hey, why not try THIS?"
And if you are not an experienced cook, this book provides invaluable guidance that a recipe book never could. It is wholly different from every food book I have ever read.
The book is clever, useful, and obviously the product of prodigious research. To the authors, I send my humble gratitude. You have made my life immeasurably easier, and my dishes far more interesting than ever before.
This book is a must-read if you love to eat or love to cook. I have already bought six copies and have given two as gifts. It's THAT good.

40 Power Tools You Can Make (Woodworking Classics Revisited) ReviewMany woodworkers enjoy designing and making jigs for power or hand-tools. Some of us make our own hand-tools too: chisels, planes, saws, chamfer-cutters, beading / vining cutters, shooting boards, spoke-shaves etc...
But how many woodworkers ever consider making their own powered shop tools?
My father, who was born in 1898, was a pattern-maker and stringed-instrument repairman. He lived through the Great Depression and understood the value of making things himself. That included making MOST of his own tools. He had this book which I read and re-read many times. We both used it as a reference to construct table-saws, band-saws, (including a horizontal re-sawing band-saw) three different thickness-sanders, a frame-saw and numerous other smaller projects.
The illustrations are black-and-white and hand-drawn by real old-school draftsmen. Although the book is small, it is edifying and inspiring! The diagrams and "blue-prints" are easy-to-read. There are a few dimensioning errors, but they are small and of little significance because you probably will never use the designs exactly as they are here. Most of the time, we cash-strapped woodworkers use spare parts to make our own tools: salvaged motors, bearings, lifts, pulleys, wheels, raceways... so we never followed these dimensions exactly.
Prices and specifications have changed dramatically since this book was published. The common sense and practical advice in this book is timeless though. Even if you never build any of the machines herein, you will get a kick out of the funky-fifties retro style. At least, I do, though that may be a reflection on my vintage!
There are complete plans for every machine listed in the contents. If you do decide to tackle one of these projects, you will undoubtedly need to change specifications to suit your motors, available bearings, hardware and other materials.
Trust me... making your own tools is practical and not nearly as hard as you might think. In many cases, you can make power tools that are BETTER than commercial models, especially if you are making them for specific applications.
Commercial tools are built for maximum versatility. You always have to pay for MORE than you need to get the few features you actually want. There are often quality or design compromises with commercial tools.
For instance, to get an accurate commercial thickness sander with decent dust collection, you have to pay several thousand dollars for an industrial-quality machine that requires 3-phase power and a large commercial dust collection system. Not only does this bloat your budget for the machine, but you have to pay for rewiring to code, get inspections and a licensed contractor, AND buy an expensive dust-collection system.
A luthier (who makes or repairs stringed instruments) needs superb accuracy and dust collection in a thickness sander, but he rarely can justify the cost or real-estate commercial machines usurp. He does NOT need to sand large sheets of wood, so why pay for the extra weight and size of commercial machines? Making a home-made thickness sander is a simple and practical solution! You can build a machine to suit the size of your shop, your projects and your budget!
Another example: Table saws...
Table saws come in two basic types: small portable contractor saws and large stationary "cabinet" models. There's a huge variation in cost and cheap saws are often riddled with design compromises and manufacturing flaws. That's because manufacturers want increased profits by reducing cost, yet they must include features for a wide variety of uses. Construction workers, Cabinet makers, hobbyists and professional luthiers have different needs, so the good saws always include superfluous features. That is never the case with your own design. Why pay for things you don't need?
I have even seen home-made table saws that are human powered by treadle or bicycle-type mechanisms! Try finding a commercially made leg-powered saw! This could be a very attractive idea for those interested in a "green" lifestyle. The ONLY way you can get one is to MAKE IT FOR YOURSELF. This book does not show specific examples of human powered tools, however the information it contains can easily be adapted for that purpose.
This book is LOADED with practical advice for metal working and welding too! I do not like to weld. Neither did my dad. This book helped us both with practical advice and examples, making that work safer and easier.
Another important thing you can get from this book even if you don't build anything from it: reading it imparts a better understanding of how power-tools work. When you see the inside of these machines, learn which parts are crucial and how they can be adjusted, you can operate ANY power-tool more accurately, safely and efficiently. This book will help you understand your machines better, and THAT will make you a better woodworker.
Even though I have only made a few of the machines herein, it has been tremendously useful. I love this book and am going to order another copy to replace the dog-eared one my dad had. If you have any interest in power-tools, (to build, buy, collect or use...) you will enjoy this quirky yet sensible retro tome.
You CAN build your own power tools.
You CAN make them inexpensively.
You CAN make them BETTER than most commercial tools for specific uses.
This book will help in many ways with practical advice and instructions; but mostly... it's just FUN !40 Power Tools You Can Make (Woodworking Classics Revisited) OverviewOriginally published by Popular Mechanics in 1941, this classic manual is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of American craftsmen. All of these machines are built with simple and highly available materials, and every project is accompanied by the original instructions, illustrations, and measured drawings. In addition, this vintage reprint offers its readers a unique look into a period in American history-when materials and labor were stretched thin, and American craftsmen were forced to "bootstrap" solutions out of the bare essentials available to them.

There are far better books out there if you are a rank beginner, but if you have started to master some of the beginning techniques and are looking to expand your "repertoire" this is the book. It has some really creative ideas for projects that are beyond the basics but don't require expertise either.

Machine Shop Training Course, Vol. 2 ReviewI have both volume 1 and volume 2. Volume 1 is excellent...probably one of the best out there for lathe work. Volume 2 is pretty much useless for most people. Unless you are going to be working with very large high end specialized milling machines you won't find much of use here. The second book doesn't really look like it was intended as a continuation of the first book...almost two completely different books rather than volume 1 and 2.Machine Shop Training Course, Vol. 2 OverviewCovers fundamental principles; methods of adjusting and using different types of machine tools - with typical examples of:

Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Using Woodworking Tools ReviewIt's not like me to wax poetic over a an introductory how-to book, but Lonnie Bird's tome on Using Woodworking Tools really is one of the finest effots I've ever seen. Taunton continues to set the bar with their 'complete illustrated' guides, but this one is exceptional for even that series.
The book offers 15 chapters divides into parts - 1) Wood and the Shop, 2) Outfitting the Shop, 3) Benches, Clamps, and Assembly, 4) Hand Tools, and 5) Power Tools. Each chapter lays in the basics and then goes on to provide a good deal of insight into the less obvious things one can accomplish with a given tool or process. The end result is a book that works at a beginners level, but retains its worth well into advanced woodworking.
Excellent illustration and layout are the standard here. I have a long standing gripe with books that use good looking models posing around brand new equipment, usually in the wrong position to do what they are attempting without losing a finger. One look at these photos, and you know you are in someone's shop. Not a new shop, but one that has come together over time, with an owner who values good tools new or used.
The text is thoughtful, straightforward, and well-written. In fact the only flaw in Using Woodworking Tools is that it is a bit more costly than many introductory books. But it has far more lasting value than most of its competition. The Complete Guide to Sharpening ReviewOoooh what a book ...
All the positive reviews made me want to know more, so I asked about it at a local woodworking shop and they said, "This is THE best book on sharpening."
It is essential to have sharp tools, I do all my work with handtools but the book goes into great detail on ALL tools, machines, different shapes of tools, the advantages of different techniques ... great detail, but it is also concise, VERY easy to read and understand, and has excellent placement of photos within the text - if you are reading about something on page 30 the pictures will be on page 30, not page 29, not page 35. Also the large pages are broken up nicely with tidbits of fascinating historical and scientific information. In parts, I actually laughed out loud!
There are electron microscope photographs of the edges of blades that have been sharpened using various methods. You can actually see the effects ... you will gain appreciation of lapping and rust prevention ... you will know how to select good tools, good sharpening aids ... you will learn about the structure of wood and how to cut with a blade.
Part of the way through it I thought, "this is great, but I wish it told me how to sharpen my kitchen knives" - wholah! in a few pages it did, it showed me how to use that stupid thing that came with the set of knives, and the method worked very well.
I could not be more pleased with this book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in sharpening, especially woodworkers, these are essential skills. Sharp tools will enhance your entire woodwork experience. You will produce finer work with greater ease, even if you use mostly power tools.
I give it 6 stars out of 5.
If it had all colour photos and was bound in leather, I would give it 10 out of 5 AND it would be a fantastic coffee table book as well (warning: that does not mean it is insubstantial, just that many non-woodworking visitors would very much enjoy it)The Complete Guide to Sharpening OverviewLee, a well-known tool manufacturer, covers the practical and technical information to sharpen tools quickly, efficiently and safely. Bruce Aidells's Complete Sausage Book : Recipes from America's Premium Sausage Maker Review`Bruce Aidells' Complete Sausage Book' by meat and sausage experts Aidells and Denis Kelly is the third book by Aidells I have reviewed and it easily maintains the consistently high quality I have come to expect from this writing team on the subject of meat. Along with the team of Schlesinger and Willoughby, they seem to be the reigning kings among culinary writers on the subject of meat, more especially on the subject of pork and sausage.
For starters, I strongly recommend this book for all people interested in reading about food and in cooking, even if you have no interest in making sausage yourself. In many ways, it is as good as the recently published book `Charcuterie' by the team of culinary journalist Michael Ruhlman and charcuterie expert and chef, Brian Poleyn, if only because Aidells and Kelly are better at staying focused on their primary topic. `Charcuterie' is very good, but if what you really want to know about is sausage, Aidells and Kelly are much better.
One thing these two books do for me is to completely reassess my opinion of Emeril Lagasse and his `Pork Fat Rules' mantra. It is so easy to take this as bluster, yet both books in one voice say that pork fat is the cream of the crop when it comes to animal fats. Beef suet is too grainy and chicken fat melts at too low a temperature to be useful for a lot of cooking applications for which pork fat is so good.
It is important to note that while this book does touch on the subjects of smoked and cured sausages, its primary subject by far is fresh sausage that you can make at home. Next to the affirmation of pork fat, I was most pleasantly surprised by the great variety of fresh sausage recipes and in the antiquity of so many of these varieties. It is easy to believe that hot and sweet Italian sausage and German bratwurst and Spanish chorizo and Polish Kielbasa have been around a long time and it is not unexpected to find that the Cajun specialties boudin and andouille are pretty old. However, it is surprising to find that ingredients such as apples and dried tomatoes are not modern foodie concoctions, but easily as old as fennel and garlic as sausage ingredients.
Another major epiphany I take from this book is the fact that along with pasta, canned tomatoes, olive oil, onions, garlic, parsley, anchovies, eggs, flour, milk and capers, sausage is one of the most versatile items one can have on hand in your pantry, as it can be used as a flavorful addition to a really wide variety of dishes. The only caveat is that fresh sausage must be frozen in order to keep it safe and it's frozen shelf life may not be much more than two months. Even so, this book will give you more than enough good ideas for using that sausage to keep you from forgetting about the stash of charcuterie goodness.
The book is divided up by three major topics. The first and shortest is on basic fresh sausage making techniques and the methods for hot and cold smoking fresh sausage. Even if you never use these techniques, the interested foodie should really know how these techniques work and what they do, so you are in a better position to make the best use of products of these two techniques. My biggest criticism with this book comes in this section which would have been much better done with a few good diagrams of various types of smoking devices. Most of this material would have been harder for me to appreciate had I not seen Alton Brown's popular `Good Eats' parody of `Iron Chef' where he cold smokes bacon with one of his typically McGyveresque contraptions.
The authors make simple sausage making sound easy, and with the right precautions, it really is. All you really need to convince yourself of this fact is to realize it is not much more than making meatloaf. The main concerns come with the care and sanitation involved in grinding the meat, as a dirty meat grinder is an open invitation to unwanted microbial beasties. And, while the book supplies sources for sausage making tools, I suggest you do the Martha Stewart routine of searching out tag sales for solid metal meat grinders you can probably get for a song.
The second major section covers recipes for making a wide variety of sausages. The chapters within this part cover:
American Sausages:
American Farmhouse Sausage with 10 recipes, including smoked sausage and chicken and apple sausage.
Southern Sausages with 9 recipes, including Boudin, Andouille, Chaurice, Tasso, and Pickled Pork.
Midwestern Sausages with 14 recipes influenced by Germany, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe.
Southwestern Sausages with 6 recipes influenced by Spain, including chorizo and poultry sausage.
Mediterranean Sausages with 13 recipes including Italian, Spanish, and Greek sausages.
Asian Style Sausages with 5 recipes including mushrooms, chicken, and shrimp.
Game and Seafood sausages with 12 recipes including salmon, duck, crawfish, buffalo, and venison.
The third major section (Part II) covers recipes for using sausage in dishes. Recipes are organized in ten (10) chapters on:

Sausage Starters: Appetizers and Salads
Sausage Based Soups
Sausage Sandwiches and Pizzas
Lotta Pasta (and Sausage)
Better Beans and Grains

This is more than enough evidence to convince me to have sausage on hand on a regular basis. And, one piece of very good news is the fact that nitrites in sausage are no longer considered a health risk and by making your own sausage, you can avoid almost all the unwanted chemicals put into commercial sausage.
This is a foodie `must have' book!
