The Sculpture Reference: Contemporary Techniques, Terms, Tools, Materials And Sculpture ReviewThe Sculpture Reference by Arthur Williams is a phenomenal achievement. An enjoyable and educational book that I find quite inspiring. Living, contemporary, working - sculptors; what an excellent set of criteria for the inclusion of the over 280 artist whose work is displayed in the over 1,100 color images within this hefty 512 page book.
The quality of the photography is excellent in every case. The alphabetical structure of the work lends a nice rhythm between materials, techniques and the results that can be achieved with them, in another words it is a good read for the serious sculptor.
The most impressive aspect is his selection of unique sculpts; the diversity of which is almost unbelievable. This handsome book already has a few scares from knocking around my studio. Almost every person that has opened it has ended up going from page one to the back cover one page at a time. Most of these people not sculptors mind you, just everyday Jane and Joes that are drawn in. I have many instructional videos and books on sculpting and sculpture, but this one book could replace half of them as an effective educational tool. The Sculpture Reference: Contemporary Techniques, Terms, Tools, Materials And Sculpture Overview

Living Materials: A Sculptor's Handbook ReviewThe good news is that this is probably the best book available on the materials of sculpture. The bad new is that it was written twenty years ago. (This paperback edition may have been published in 1988, but AFAIK, the text was unchanged from the original 1983 version.)
If you are interested in traditional forms, then this book probably covers everything you need. But if you want information on any materials and/or techniques that came into use post-1970's, you're out of luck. Plastics are a good example: urethane and silicone molding rubbers are given a cursory mention, even though they are quite common now. I don't think polyurethane casting resins (Por-a-kast, Poly 15, etc.) or polyurethane glues (Gorilla Glue, ProBond, etc.) are mentioned at all.
The wood section is surprisingly thin, with a bias toward subtractive methods (carving), even though wood construction is as common--if not more common--in contemporary work.
While there are plenty of photos (all black and white) of classic sculptures, there are a lot of unbelievably bad pieces illustrated--probably chosen for their materials rather than quality. Some are downright hideous.
This is a good resource, but be aware that it is no longer comprehensive.Living Materials: A Sculptor's Handbook OverviewEvery material has an active presence and every material is susceptible to change. The task of the sculptor is to understand the natural properties of a chosen material, to know in the process of creation how best to work with, or against, its characteristics. In this generously illustrated studio manual, sculptor Oliver Andrews takes a new approach to sculpture, focusing on how the innate assertiveness of materials affects the complex act of making a sculpture.

Artisan Welding Projects: 25 Decorative Projects for Hobby Welders ReviewThis is a good book for ideas. It shows what can be done with lightweight steel stock and a few metal working tools. The pictures are high quality.
However, the projects are poorly done. In a book like this, I expected to see professional looking welds with nice regular beads. Instead they look like pigeon droppings - the sort of thing one might expect from a rank beginner. Nor is this just a matter of appearance, some of the welds just look unsound with poor penetration and fusion. There is no attempt to design the projects so that the welds are out of sight and these are not the kind of projects where the look of the welds adds to the overall appearance, especially since they are so poorly executed. Some of the projects involve scrolled flat stock. The scrolls are not done well. Curves are misshapen, the ends have flat spots from the bender and matched pairs are glaringly assymetric. All these problems could have been corrected by taking a just little more time with the work. Many of the projects leave sharp corners in positions where they could cause a nasty gash if one were to bump into them.
I am left wondering if the author actually knows how to weld and whether she would have any of these items in her own home.Artisan Welding Projects: 25 Decorative Projects for Hobby Welders OverviewArtisan Welding Projects brings together project designs and complete directions for building 25 innovative, never-before-published metal-work projects. This book takes solid aim at growing numbers of amateur welding and blacksmith enthusiasts who are taking up the hobby as inexpensive yet full-featured welding equipment becomes widely available. The Artist Blacksmith: Design and Techniques ReviewI'm always searching for a new book for my husband's growing blacksmithing/metalworking library. He is an experienced metal artist and already owns most of the books I find. This book was new and I knew wasn't on his shelves, so I took a chance. He LOVES it! He had heard good things about the author and is still spending many hours pouring over the great photos, graphics and text. He told me any metal artist he knows would enjoy this book and want to keep it for reference. Thanks for an excellent birthday gift idea!
