Homebuilt Firearms ReviewI originally had an idea for building this firearm model in 2009 based on a ball detent chamber lock and a bar type magazine, with the idea it could be built in an average home garage using common tools: a Drill Press, Angle and Bench Grinders, and a Wire Welder, along with a hacksaw, files, common tools, etc.
This book describes the project; beginning with a used .22 barrel purchased at a local gunshow, and then using the tools and $5 worth of scrap steel from a local fabricator, the remainder of the mechanism was built, first as a Single Action assembly, ( Cocked prior to each shot..) then modified into a Double Action, where the trigger pull initates chambering of each round then releases the hammer for firing.
The book has about 120 pages, is a large 6.69" x 9.61" format, glossy covered softback with fifty drawings and photos.
It should be ideal as a guide for gun enthusiasts, Hobbyists, Builders and Sportsmen to fabricate a homebuilt firearm with their own ingenuity and skill, ending with a real, working firearm.
There is a responsibility required as to safety in the entire workplan, wearing of safety protection, avoiding all manner of hazards-- that is a part of any endeavor by a responsible person.
I hope the instructions and pictures provide an educational and interesting guide to those interested in firearms, hobby construction, and using shop tools.Homebuilt Firearms Overview"Homebuilt Firearms"is a great initiation for hobbyists who wish to try building a real gun from scratch, using only standard garage tools, NOT milling machines or lathes.Such a project is definitely a great learning and skill building experience for a person who enjoys gun sports and shooting-- and unusual, challenging projects.Starting with a used .22 barrel from a gun show, andadding some scrap Steel, a hobby builder can utilize his ingenuity and skills... using a drill press, grinders, wire welder, a hacksaw, files, etc.and can indeed build a firearm, first a repeater Single Action model, then a Double Action weapon. The rifle project described here is a functional ten shot .22 rifle. It offers a fun and rewarding building experience for any mechanically minded individual, an achievement to be enjoyed and used.

Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication Book ReviewIf you think this book is about creating geometric solids from sheet metal, or how to mark out a cone and fold it to shape, or the basic principles of sheet metal work, then think again. It is about one man's project of recreating an old car from sheet metal and the tools and methods he used to achieve this goal. There is nothing in this book that would assist the beginner metal worker to build even a simple tool box. I purchased this book in the belief (silly me) that it would contain information that would assist me fold, bend and shape sheet metal into basic everyday things like tool boxes, box trailers, pipe bending etc. This book is more for the advanced automotive body builder who specialises in the restoration of old cars, hot rods and customising autos.A more suitable title for this book would be "Automotive Sheet Metal Fabrication", which would not be so misleading to the web browser. This book was purchased on title alone as there were no prior book reviews to assist identify its contents and assist in the selection. If I was into auto restoration this would be a handy book to have and would rate it a 3 for content, but I understood this book to be a manual to assist the everyday metal worker in his/her work. No references to using a pan brake folder when bending,no projects to test the newly acquired skills and nothing on developing and making various geometric shapes from sheet metal. Well, we live and learn from our mistakes and if I knew the real content of this book I would not have bought it. Kind regards Uncle Bob.Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication Book OverviewDevelop the skills you need to build your own sheet metal parts! Expert customizer Tim Remus combines his knowledge with metal-workers Steve Davis, Bob Monroe, Steve Moal and Craig Naff, to provide all the instruction you need to get the job done right. Detailed chapters cover: the right tool for the job; materials; welding; repairs; building from scratch and finish work; plus tips on how to repair and modify an existing part and starting from scratch. Backyard Blacksmith ReviewI got this book expecting an amazing guide to help with my learning blacksmithing.
I was disappointed.
through my job at a Boy Scout camp i have been doing a small amount of blacksmithing with almost no training, I had read a little before hand but i was looking for a good book to teach me the basics.
this was not that book, she will tell you a lot of useful things, but more than once she would say "do _____" with the underline being some operation that she never mentioned and just assumes you know it.
BUT, the full color photos are amazing i can't tell you how long i've looked for a good picture of the metal heat colors before i found the one in this book.
in all the book is useful, though not quite enough info really for the starting blacksmithBackyard Blacksmith OverviewThe Backyard Blacksmith shows you how -- with some patience and a working knowledge of metals, basic tools, and techniques -- blacksmithing can be easy to learn, and a rewarding hobby. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges, and handles, and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.

The Complete Bladesmith: Forging Your Way To Perfection ReviewJim Hrisoulas has let out information some knifemakers refuse to share, and he is big enough to handle the criticism. He not only knows how to create beautiful knives and swords, he also knows how to write, so the novice to experienced knifemaker can comprehend the content. He also provides excellent diagrams of the subject matter he is addressing at the time. From the steels, tools, and techniques, to some trade secrets, it is all here. For the novice to experienced knifemaker, there is something for you to discover. The forging basics are spelled out in a clear and concise format. Most anything that has to do with the forging of blades is covered thoroughly in this volume. This book is a must for the wannna-be knifemaker. Jim also has two other books in print, "The Master Bladesmith", (Advanced Studies in Steel); and, "The Pattern Welded Blade", (Artistry in Iron). I have all three volumes, and most other knifemaking books in print, the other books being superfluous in contrast. All three volumes are a must for the serious forger of the steel blade, and should be required reading. What an addition to a starving subject matter, not to mention an attractive classic collection of works in the field. These books are really upscale in content in comparison. Why did I give the book a 9 rating if it is so good? You really need all three to have the best, a 10+. Warning: These books are not for the knifemakers that use the stock-removal method for knifemaking, although there is information that any knifemaker would like to read and use, it just may not pay to buy them. I have no personal bias here, as I do both methods. I would be happy to give my opinion of content regarding the other two books. Did someone say light the forge? Nels Nelson - nelsk@azstarnet.coThe Complete Bladesmith: Forging Your Way To Perfection OverviewLooking for instructions in bladesmithing that'll put you on the cutting edge of the custom blade market? Then this definitive guide to forging world-class blades is for you. Written by a master bladesmith, this book tells you how to set up your forge, select your materials, fashion grips and hilts, grind edges and much more!

Artisan Welding Projects: 25 Decorative Projects for Hobby Welders ReviewThis is a good book for ideas. It shows what can be done with lightweight steel stock and a few metal working tools. The pictures are high quality.
However, the projects are poorly done. In a book like this, I expected to see professional looking welds with nice regular beads. Instead they look like pigeon droppings - the sort of thing one might expect from a rank beginner. Nor is this just a matter of appearance, some of the welds just look unsound with poor penetration and fusion. There is no attempt to design the projects so that the welds are out of sight and these are not the kind of projects where the look of the welds adds to the overall appearance, especially since they are so poorly executed. Some of the projects involve scrolled flat stock. The scrolls are not done well. Curves are misshapen, the ends have flat spots from the bender and matched pairs are glaringly assymetric. All these problems could have been corrected by taking a just little more time with the work. Many of the projects leave sharp corners in positions where they could cause a nasty gash if one were to bump into them.
I am left wondering if the author actually knows how to weld and whether she would have any of these items in her own home.Artisan Welding Projects: 25 Decorative Projects for Hobby Welders OverviewArtisan Welding Projects brings together project designs and complete directions for building 25 innovative, never-before-published metal-work projects. This book takes solid aim at growing numbers of amateur welding and blacksmith enthusiasts who are taking up the hobby as inexpensive yet full-featured welding equipment becomes widely available. It features the latest in welding equipment and techniques, and offers projects that are both practical and ornamental. It is the ideal book for budding art and craft welders, the largest growing segment of the rapidly expanding DIY welding market.

How to Make Knives ReviewThis could have been a great book except for one thing. Obviously the publishers did not care enough when updating this book to update or even take the time to use quality photo's in their book. I would like to see what is going on in the book but most of the photo's are so awful you can only see shades of grey and black. To let all this effort by Loveless go to waste is a shame!
Save your money and buy an older version, one that hopefully has clear and quality photo's so you will know what R.W.Loveless is building or what step he is using.
The book itself is a great instructional tool. However you just can't get all that Loveless has to offer in this new version because you can not make out many of the photo's.How to Make Knives OverviewLearn how with "the bible of knife-making." It gives complete instructions on making high quality handmade knives and covers forging and stock removal, mirror polishing, sheath making, safety techniques, required tools and supplies, and more.

Step-by-Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It ReviewThis book primarily covers making knives (mostly kitchen knives) by starting with thin plates of steel (HUGE bandsaw blades), cutting out a knife blank, and shaping the knife by grinding it. I personally far prefer forging a blade, which this author does not even touch on.
However, Mr. Boye does offer solid knowledge on grinding, heat treating, attaching handles and bolsters (all necessary skills no matter how you make knives)... and an extensive section on acid etching which I have yet to find equalled in any other knifemaking book I've read.
So while I may not care for Mr. Boye's chosen method of production, I recognize his pure artistic ability and am gratefull for his willingness to share his hard won knowledge.Step-by-Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It OverviewA knife is the most basic tool, and the average adult uses a knife almost every day.Yet there are very few individually made knives in existence, and few people who know how to make knives.Step by Step Knifemaking, by master knifemaker David Boye, is widely regarded as the classic on the art of handcrafted knives.Thorough, clear, detailed instructions guide the reader through each step in how to make a knife.Generously illustrated with photos and drawings on most pages, this book reads like a one-on-one workshop with a thoughtful teacher. The reader is led to discover the spiritual connection between himself and his work, to develop his sense of artistry, and to acquire practical skills for self-sufficiency.Completely self-taught, the author guides the beginning knifemaker through the thinking processes necessary to make a knife; inspires confidence in the reader to begin at his own skill level; and shows how it can be done on a financial shoestring.Topics covered include tools, setting up a shop, knife design, grinding, heat treating, polishing, sharpening, blade etching, sheath making, and more.Boye's outdoor knives, kitchen cutlery, and utility knives are functional and "peace-loving," and the chapter on etching designs into the blades is one of the few guides to this unique art in print. With over 175,000 copies in print, Step by Step Knifemaking has deeply moved thousands to involve themselves in this craft, and they constitute a visible portion of today's knifemakers. This book can impel the reader to a personally satisfying, alternative backyard career, making his own useful knife art. It is an enjoyable, indispensable reference for those wanting to learn knifemaking, become more self-reliant, or for anyone with an interest in the ancient craft of blades."Handmade knives are unique," writes David Boye, "reflecting the skills and personality of their maker. They impart a personal touch to what would be a cold impersonal item. Thus it is with a handmade knife, or a handmade article of any kind, that there is a subtle exchange of electromagnetic energy that is transferred from the heart and the hands of the craftsman to the heart of the person who sees and uses the handmade article. Hopefully, the product will be the embodiment and expression of love and beauty in a useful, sanitary, and safe cutting tool - a hint of a deeper, more profound spirit in the process of living."272 pages; 170 illustrations; 155 photographs.

The Backyard Blacksmith: Traditional Techniques for the Modern Smith ReviewI have been to a blacksmithing rodeo or two and have seen most of the books intended for the beginner blacksmith. This one immediately jumps up to the top of my recommended list.
Ms. Sims is an artist and blacksmith who specializes in creating hand-forged functional ironwork. Her public art commissions include the Omaha Botanical Gardens in Nebraska, Lincoln Log State Historic Site in Illinois and Fordham University in New York. In additional to teaching blacksmithing classes and workshops, she has been a featured demonstrator for blacksmithing conferences throughout North America. She is the owner/operator of the Five Points Blacksmith Shop in Charleston, IL since 1993.
Folks, this is a get-your-hands dirty lady and in this book she shares her experience and expertise in the subject matter, but probably more importantly, has the ability to pass on just how it is done.
The Backyard Blacksmith will show you how, with some patience and working knowledge of metals, basic tools and techniques, blacksmithing can be easy to learn and a rewarding hobby. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges and handles and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such as letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.
In all over 20 projects are organized by difficulty level allowing new, novice or hobby blacksmiths to progress at their own pace and master/reinforce the skills they learned in earlier chapters.
The book is also sprinkled with safety and other tips and techniques.
If you are a beginning, hobby or want-a-bee blacksmith, this book should be read cover to cover several times.
Ken Scharabok, Poor Boy Blacksmith Tools
The Backyard Blacksmith: Traditional Techniques for the Modern Smith OverviewThe Backyard Blacksmith takes the mystery out of blacksmithing, but not the magic...There is an increasing interest and revival in the art of blacksmithing as a hobby and art, and both men and women are becoming at-home blacksmiths. Blacksmithing is a simple, rewarding craft anyone can enjoy in their backyard or home workshop -- even beginners can produce useful and beautiful projects on their first try.The Backyard Blacksmith shows you how blacksmithing can be easy to learn, and a rewarding hobby, with some patience and a working knowledge of metals, basic tools, and techniques. Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop, Revised ReviewI bought this book to give me some guidance on making my first knife. I think that I am the intended audience for this book which stresses starting out and the $50 investement that making a knife can take. However, Wanye is too distracted by his 40+ years of knife making to be able to break down knife making for a newbie. He wants to tell you all sorts of little details that will not help you make your first knife. Like he gives you a history of what quench solutions he has used without telling you the proportions of the different ingredents in his current perfected mixture. So even if you wanted to duplicate his solution you couldn't. Also Wayne likes to scrounge yard sales and create grinders from old washing machines. So he spends a huge amount of time talking about all the gismos he has made and special jigs. Unfortunately he wants you to create all the stuff he has made over 40 years without any sort of details or dimensions. He just shows pictures and gives a few general comments about having found the parts at various yard sales and salvage yards.
He makes assumptions that you know things. Like he glossed over pinning a handle onto a knife by just saying to "pin it". I was left wondering, what is the pin for, what is it made of, how do you do it, ...
What I was really hoping for was a set of clear instructions to make "this" sample knife do 1, 2, 3, 4, ... but he does not give you that. I have been more helped by doing a google search and finding a few web sites that in just several pages tell you what to do step by step with enough detail that you can follow it.
I do not recommend this as your first book on knife making.Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop, Revised Overview-Reveals secrets to crafting durable knives without spending a lot of money -Speaks to a ready audience: BLADE Show -- largest custom cutlery show in the U.S. draws 10,000 people each year -Presents simple, expert instruction in full color photos Knife-makers, veteran and novice, know and trust Wayne Goddard's techniques and teaching, and it shows in the level of craftsmanship featured at the nation's knife shows. The very book that changed the face of bladesmithing is revamped, with full color photo instructions and the tried-and-true format knife-makers will refer to for years to come. This page-turner covers: -Tools needed to make knives, and outfitting a personal workshop without breaking the bank. -Forging and heat-treating techniques, to help improve existing bladesmithing skills -200+ color photos demonstrate basic knife making techniques The easiest guide to making knives is Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop, Revised.
