Step-By-Step Relief Carving: Mastering the Use of Light and Perspective in Woodcarving ReviewThis book is exactly what its title says. If you are new to relief carving, you might think that realistic relief carving involves simply in the carving half round. But this approach will not be satisfactory. This book shows to how even very shallow relief can be amazingly realistic if proper perspective is used. The book has several simple projects in the beginning to help you master the basic principles. Then you can carve a very nice nautical scene which is detailed step by step with ample photos. He uses both standard wood carver's hand tools such as gouges and also power tools including a router and a dremel. I rated this a 5 because of the efective way the content is organized and the detail provided.Step-By-Step Relief Carving: Mastering the Use of Light and Perspective in Woodcarving Overview

Power Tools: An Electrifying Celebration and Grounded Guide ReviewWow! If you love power tools like I do (or have a dad, husband, sister or friend who does), this is terrific book that treats the topic extensively. Sandor has done a great job of showing all the different kinds of tools there are--both portable powertools, benchtop machines, and full-sized woodworking machinery (Sandor beautifully photographed the book as well as writing it). He shows us what the differences are between similar kinds of tools (e.g. joist drills vs. hammer drills vs. heavy-duty drills) reveals each tool's important features, tells about the latest technologies and offers frank, informed ideas about which tools are best for various kinds of jobs.
There are lots of tools here that you've seen at your local home depot, but also lots of more "exotic" tools and machines from Europe (Festool, Metabo, Fein, Lamello, etc.) that you probably haven't seen before. And lots of great accessories are shown; some obscure ones I've never seen before included a thing that turns an ordinary circular saw into a chain-saw beam cutting saw! A source of supply at the end of the book tells where you can buy these neat accessories (and the tools too).
To add to the fun, each chapter has a "vintage tool" section that teaches a bit of the history of that drill, belt sander, bandsaw, etc. This section also shows us some really cool vintage tools--like a 3-wheel Craftsman belt sander from the 40s with a streamlined-looking art deco body and an early cast iron Boice-Crane jig saw that's just beautiful.
An impressive coffee-table-size, thick volume (that's beautifully printed), I think this is a great book to give as a gift--although you'll want to buy one for yourself too (I did!) A "must have" book.Power Tools: An Electrifying Celebration and Grounded Guide OverviewThe ultimate tool book, Power Tools is the next best thing to owning every tool on the planet. Featuring more than 200 tools from classics to the most inventively engineered newcomers, this book shows power tools and machines as they've never been seen before. Power Tools takes the reader inside the tools, explains how they work, compares the features that make great tools, and shows the accessories that make great tools versatile.-- Explores the ingenious engineering behind each tool's design.-- Includes more than 400 color photographs and tables of specifications.-- Takes a look into the future, including cutting-edge tool technology.

Turning Bowls with Richard Raffan ReviewThis book, and a couple others (I bought a set of 3) catapulted my turning abilities from novice to salable in a just a few projects. More importantly, as I improved, I've saved many hours and sheets of sandpaper. His explanations, photos, and diagrams combine to make lathe turning very understandable and even more fun than I expected. Even some of the techniques that gave me some trepidation I now find routine. If you have a lathe or thinking about it, this book and others by the same author (Turning Wood is the basics) are highly beneficial.Turning Bowls with Richard Raffan OverviewTurning a bowl may seem daunting, but woodworkers can create beautiful bowls with the expert advice and instructions in this book. Richard Raffan walks them through the process -- from wood selection and design advice to surface embellishment and finishing techniques. With step-by-step photos and detailed drawings.

Learn to Turn: A Beginner's Guide to Woodturning from Start to Finish ReviewWhat a GREAT book. I am a new turner and am reading everything I can get my hands on about turning. This is my second overview book on the subject. I just picked one to start as I didn't have any idea what book to try. I didn't learn what I had hope to in the first one so when I saw Barry Gross' book, I thought I would try it. Was I glad I did!
Mr. Gross' book, Learn To Turn, provides all the basic information in a CLEAR format. There are pictures to go along with the text and they are clearly label as are the parts of the machine, tools or safety measures he is writing about.
When he talks about "truing up" or other turning terms, he actually defines what that means in laymen's terms so a true beginner can grasp what he is talking about. When he discusses the various tools, he pictures that tool on the page where is he explaining how to use the tool. This really helped me to learn which tool was which and just how they should be used.
Mr. Gross discusses finishes and shows four different ones so you can choose which you would use for which project. Of course, he has a section on safety and the pictures really bring home the point of the need for safety. There is also a section on tool sharpening and a detailed description of how each tool should be correctly sharpened. Sanding is another section and I learned about a sandpaper called New Wave and Abranet sanding screens. He tells how to make a jam chuck - another one of those turning terms - and explains how and why to use it and what it is. And not book would be complete without the glossary of terms and a company resources list.
In the final section of the book, Mr. Gross provides instructions for eight projects from a simple bowl to a wonderful Christmas Ornament. These eight projects will keep this turner busy for several months as I try to come close to what the author's turnings look like. For $14.95, this is a book I would recommend to a new turner or for a turning instructor as a classroom text. I know my copy will become a well-worn text in my shop.Learn to Turn: A Beginner's Guide to Woodturning from Start to Finish OverviewWritten for true beginners, this approachable and enjoyable instructional guide teaches the art of turning. Readers receive advice on every step of the turning process, including selecting the right lathe, basic safety and woodshop setup, an overview of the proper tools and how to use them, and the basics on sharpening, sanding, and finishing. Step-by-step instructions for eight projects such as a birdhouse, a simple bowl, and a pepper mill are included. This guide also features a special chapter that addresses and reveals surprisingly simple solutions to common beginner mistakes.

Tauntons Complete Illustrated Guide To Turning ReviewI've avoided lathe work for a great many years, satisfying my lust for sawdust by cabinetry and furniture. But in the back of my mind there has always been a little voice that would ask me 'why not?' every time I looked at a block off wood with beautiful grain. Well I finally broke down and spent the sizeable amount of money needed to buy and equip a good lathe. "While I'm waiting for it to be shipped," I thought, "I'll read a book about it." After all this is how I've taught myself just about everything else.
Let me preface the remarks I'm about to make with the fact Turning, by Richard Raffan, is an excellent introduction to the subject of turning. The book is an inexhaustible resource for learning about the lathe, its tools, wood, preparation and the main varieties of lathe work - spindle, end grain, and face. There is even a bit on sanding and finishing. Well illustrated, I don't think you could do better for starting out and shop reference.
But, and this is a big but, learning to work on a lathe is not like learning to work on a table saw. The latter presents a set of basic mechanical tasks that become clear quickly. While the table saw has some esoterica about it, there is nothing actually difficult to master. The lathe, however, is a world unto itself. The possible choices of tools and techniques are large, shapes are nearly infinite, and it is all going on at high speed only inched from your fingers.
No book can accurately describe the shift one makes in holding a gouge or the proper pace for cutting threads. For that you will need a human with enough patience to take you through the learning period. Indeed, by this book, read it carefully, and put it on a shelf. Then sign up for lessons, figure out what you really want to do with your lathe, and return to this book. Mastery will follow, but not without a few unnerving moments.Tauntons Complete Illustrated Guide To Turning OverviewTaunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning features step-by-step descriptions for an abundance of wood turning techniques, including both spindle and faceplate methods. Over 900 color photos accompany detailed, hands-on instructions for turning wood, including how to use lathes, turning tools and materials, chucks, as well as sharpening tools.
