Machine Shop Training Course, Vol. 2 ReviewI have both volume 1 and volume 2. Volume 1 is excellent...probably one of the best out there for lathe work. Volume 2 is pretty much useless for most people. Unless you are going to be working with very large high end specialized milling machines you won't find much of use here. The second book doesn't really look like it was intended as a continuation of the first book...almost two completely different books rather than volume 1 and 2.Machine Shop Training Course, Vol. 2 OverviewCovers fundamental principles; methods of adjusting and using different types of machine tools - with typical examples of:
work-measuring instruments and gauges
cutting screw threads by different processes
thread grinding
gear cutting
precision toolmaking methods
typical shop problems with solutions
miscellaneous facts relating to the art of machine construction and much, much more

It is very well illustrated throughout and the written descriptions are easily understood.Woodturning Techniques (Darlow's Woodturning series) OverviewThe medieval art of woodturning, common in England, has recently caught the attention of the rest of the woodworking world. Moving beyond the staple table legs and banister rungs, this detailed tutorial shows how to shape bowls, vases, and other works of art. Close-up photography and detailed diagrams enhance in-depth explanations of each technique, including gluing, spindle turning, cupchucking, threading, turning, and finishing. The historical background of the art is covered and attention is given to historic techniques, as well as more recent methods.

Turning Bowls with Richard Raffan ReviewThis book, and a couple others (I bought a set of 3) catapulted my turning abilities from novice to salable in a just a few projects. More importantly, as I improved, I've saved many hours and sheets of sandpaper. His explanations, photos, and diagrams combine to make lathe turning very understandable and even more fun than I expected. Even some of the techniques that gave me some trepidation I now find routine. If you have a lathe or thinking about it, this book and others by the same author (Turning Wood is the basics) are highly beneficial.Turning Bowls with Richard Raffan OverviewTurning a bowl may seem daunting, but woodworkers can create beautiful bowls with the expert advice and instructions in this book. Richard Raffan walks them through the process -- from wood selection and design advice to surface embellishment and finishing techniques. With step-by-step photos and detailed drawings.

Learn to Turn: A Beginner's Guide to Woodturning from Start to Finish ReviewWhat a GREAT book. I am a new turner and am reading everything I can get my hands on about turning. This is my second overview book on the subject. I just picked one to start as I didn't have any idea what book to try. I didn't learn what I had hope to in the first one so when I saw Barry Gross' book, I thought I would try it. Was I glad I did!
Mr. Gross' book, Learn To Turn, provides all the basic information in a CLEAR format. There are pictures to go along with the text and they are clearly label as are the parts of the machine, tools or safety measures he is writing about.
When he talks about "truing up" or other turning terms, he actually defines what that means in laymen's terms so a true beginner can grasp what he is talking about. When he discusses the various tools, he pictures that tool on the page where is he explaining how to use the tool. This really helped me to learn which tool was which and just how they should be used.
Mr. Gross discusses finishes and shows four different ones so you can choose which you would use for which project. Of course, he has a section on safety and the pictures really bring home the point of the need for safety. There is also a section on tool sharpening and a detailed description of how each tool should be correctly sharpened. Sanding is another section and I learned about a sandpaper called New Wave and Abranet sanding screens. He tells how to make a jam chuck - another one of those turning terms - and explains how and why to use it and what it is. And not book would be complete without the glossary of terms and a company resources list.
In the final section of the book, Mr. Gross provides instructions for eight projects from a simple bowl to a wonderful Christmas Ornament. These eight projects will keep this turner busy for several months as I try to come close to what the author's turnings look like. For $14.95, this is a book I would recommend to a new turner or for a turning instructor as a classroom text. I know my copy will become a well-worn text in my shop.Learn to Turn: A Beginner's Guide to Woodturning from Start to Finish OverviewWritten for true beginners, this approachable and enjoyable instructional guide teaches the art of turning. Readers receive advice on every step of the turning process, including selecting the right lathe, basic safety and woodshop setup, an overview of the proper tools and how to use them, and the basics on sharpening, sanding, and finishing. Step-by-step instructions for eight projects such as a birdhouse, a simple bowl, and a pepper mill are included. This guide also features a special chapter that addresses and reveals surprisingly simple solutions to common beginner mistakes.

Tauntons Complete Illustrated Guide To Turning ReviewI've avoided lathe work for a great many years, satisfying my lust for sawdust by cabinetry and furniture. But in the back of my mind there has always been a little voice that would ask me 'why not?' every time I looked at a block off wood with beautiful grain. Well I finally broke down and spent the sizeable amount of money needed to buy and equip a good lathe. "While I'm waiting for it to be shipped," I thought, "I'll read a book about it." After all this is how I've taught myself just about everything else.
Let me preface the remarks I'm about to make with the fact Turning, by Richard Raffan, is an excellent introduction to the subject of turning. The book is an inexhaustible resource for learning about the lathe, its tools, wood, preparation and the main varieties of lathe work - spindle, end grain, and face. There is even a bit on sanding and finishing. Well illustrated, I don't think you could do better for starting out and shop reference.
But, and this is a big but, learning to work on a lathe is not like learning to work on a table saw. The latter presents a set of basic mechanical tasks that become clear quickly. While the table saw has some esoterica about it, there is nothing actually difficult to master. The lathe, however, is a world unto itself. The possible choices of tools and techniques are large, shapes are nearly infinite, and it is all going on at high speed only inched from your fingers.
No book can accurately describe the shift one makes in holding a gouge or the proper pace for cutting threads. For that you will need a human with enough patience to take you through the learning period. Indeed, by this book, read it carefully, and put it on a shelf. Then sign up for lessons, figure out what you really want to do with your lathe, and return to this book. Mastery will follow, but not without a few unnerving moments.Tauntons Complete Illustrated Guide To Turning OverviewTaunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning features step-by-step descriptions for an abundance of wood turning techniques, including both spindle and faceplate methods. Over 900 color photos accompany detailed, hands-on instructions for turning wood, including how to use lathes, turning tools and materials, chucks, as well as sharpening tools.

Machine Shop Trade Secrets: A Guide to Manufacturing Machine Shop Practices ReviewThis has to be the most unusual book I have ever read. Each chapter contains a number of separate numbered paragraphs. Each paragraph contains the author's thoughts about some specific aspect of machining. This organizational format is almost bizarre, but somehow strangely effective. This book has the best description I have ever seen on what cutters are best used for particular functions. I also really enjoyed the do's and don'ts on NC machining. I've gone through it twice now in one week and will probably read it a third time before long.
This is not the usual textbook on machining with numerous pages devoted to cutting theory that somehow never quite gets to the point of telling you what feed and speed to use to accomplish a specific task. Nor does it have an entire chapter telling you what a lathe is and how the various parts are named. The utility of many such treatises is probably exhausted once past the point of contributing to some academician's case for being awarded tenure. This one is really different. It really has a lot of good advice that's applicable to virtually any environment.
Some of the points the author makes may seem trivial at first (buy lots of tools, for example)as noted by at least one other reviewer. But if you take the time to read and understand what he's saying, you'll see there is some interesting and really decent advice here. Buying special purpose tools rather than the 6-in-1 kind, for example, not only produces better work, but helps avoid time consuming setups and reduces bad parts.
I've got a suggestion for the author for another book. He might organize it by "how to" topic. For example, "how to cut an interior keyway". There are lots of ways to do most of these things, ranging from simple hand tool methods to megacredit special purpose machinery. It would be interesting (for me at least) to see 4 to 5 ways presented for each "how to" with a brief discussion of their pluses and minuses.
Machine Shop Trade Secrets: A Guide to Manufacturing Machine Shop Practices OverviewYou will discover ways to:

Work faster.
Select, make, and grind cutters.
Surface grind blocks, pins and shapes
Cut threads, knurl parts and eliminate warp.
Choose realistic feeds, speeds and depths of cut.
Remove broken taps, drill bits and other hardware.
Apply proven CNC techniques to maximize output.
Improve surface finishes and hold tighter tolerances
Assist engineers with design and manufacturing issues.
Improve indicating skills and develop a 'feel" for machining.
