Quacks and Crusaders: The Fabulous Careers of John Brinkley, Norman Baker, and Harry Hoxsey ReviewWe have had a boom in interest in "alternative health care" recently, but that interest has been with us ever since there has been a medical establishment to which there could be "alternatives." In the American Midwest in the 1930s three alternative healers began a rise to financial, social, and political power. _Quacks & Crusaders: The Fabulous Careers of John Brinkley, Norman Baker, and Harry Hoxsey_ (University Press of Kansas) by Eric S. Juhnke documents the rise and fall of all three medical conmen, and gives a lesson in the dangers of credulousness.

John Brinkley was a licensed doctor, having graduated from a diploma mill. He latched on to the "gland transplant" experiments done on animals, and believed that transplanting animal glands into humans was a key for rejuvenation. "A man is as old as his glands, and his glands are as old as his sex glands," he proclaimed. Male goats were the randiest animals, so they were the tissue donors, but they turned out to be just the thing to boost female fertility and development of the bust, too. He compared himself to Jesus, gave sermons, and demonized the American Medical Association. Norman Baker specialized in cancer cures. He worked as a machinist and in vaudeville before settling down in Muscatine, Iowa. He persuaded city officials to let him start a radio station that would present honest-to-goodness down home programs as opposed to the high-brow fare coming from the cities. Baker called Morris Fishbein, the head of the AMA, the "Jewish dominator of the medical trust of America," and insisted that his clinic was a bastion for personal freedom and against the evils of urban industrialism. Harry Hoxsey proved to have the most staying power. He specialized in herbal cancer cures as well. Not a physician, he was able to enroll renegade physicians into his service, and he was bankrolled by an evangelist minister. In Dallas, he enjoyed poker, nightclubs, and womanizing, and his diatribes against interference by the AMA and the government won him friends from the political right wing.

Juhnke's tales of these colorful characters are great fun to read, even though the rascals bilked many of their patients of money and sometimes their lives. The eventual success of the AMA against them is not a pure victory; the shortcomings of the AMA at the time are examined here, too. Few people remember these quacks now. The towns that boosted them because they brought in business now view them as an embarrassing part of their histories. It is important that Juhnke has brought them again to our attention. We may no longer have such manifestations as goat gland transplants, but anyone who watches television knows that herbal cures, homeopathy, and healing magnets are still taking money from the gullible. There is still a large group of potential patients who view organized medicine (and governmental regulation of medical treatment) as some sort of conspiracy, and of course there are plenty of faith healers who are glad to have their flocks doubting the efficacy of regular medical treatment. People are finding it harder to pay for physicians, and drug costs are up. Brinkley, Baker, and Hoxsey may have eventually lost their power and their millions, but Juhnke's useful study reminds us that there are always healers ready to take their place.Quacks and Crusaders: The Fabulous Careers of John Brinkley, Norman Baker, and Harry Hoxsey OverviewOne promoted goat gland transplants as a remedy for lost virility or infertility. Another blamed aluminum cooking utensils for causing cancer. The third was targeted by the Food and Drug Administration as "public enemy number one" for his worthless cures.John Brinkley, Norman Baker, and Harry Hoxsey were the ultimate snake oil salesmen of the twentieth century. With backgrounds in lowbrow performance—-carnivals, vaudeville, night clubs—-each of these charismatic con men used the emerging power of radio to hawk alternative cures in the Midwest beginning in the roaring twenties, through the Depression era, and into the 1950s. All scorned the medical establishment for avarice while amassing considerable fortunes of their own; and although the American Medical Association castigated them for preying on the ignorant, this book shows that the case against them wasn't all that simple.Quacks and Crusaders is an entertaining and revealing look at the connections between fraudulent medicine and populist rhetoric in middle America. Eric Juhnke examines the careers of these three personalities to paint a vision of medicine that championed average Americans, denounced elitism, and affirmed rustic values. All appealed to the common man, winning audiences and patrons in rural America by casting their pitches in everyday language, and their messages proved more potent than their medicines in treating the fears, insecurities, and failing health of their numerous supporters.Juhnke first examines the career of each man, revealing their flair as businessmen and propagandists-—with such success that Brinkley and Baker ran for governor of their states and Hoxsey had thousands of supporters protest his "persecution" by the FDA. Juhnke then investigates the identity, motives, and willingness to believe of their many patients and followers. He shows how all three men used populist rhetoric-—evangelical, anti-Communist, anti-intellectual—-to attract their clients, and then how their particular brand of populism sometimes mutated to anti-Semitism and other sentiments of the radical right.By treating the incurable, Brinkley, Baker, and Hoxsey took on the mantles of common folk crusaders. Brinkley was idolized for his goat gland cures until his death, and Hoxsey's former head nurse continued his work from Tijuana until her death in 1999. In considering who visits quacks and why, Juhnke has shed new light not only on the ongoing battle between alternative and organized medicine, but also on the persistence of quackery-—and gullibility—-in American culture.

Using Your Brain--For a Change: Neuro-Linguistic Programming Review
Starting with the deliberately ambiguous title, what you get in this book is pure Bandler. Not surprising, really, since the text is an edited version of several seminars Bandler conducted in 1982.

It seems to me that you can treat the book as an educational exercise, or as an interactive experience. Indeed, the editing is so effective that I could imagine myself strolling through town letting Bandler show me the world through his eyes, listen to it with his ears, and so on. And a mightily enjoyable experience it was.

At the surface level the book covers topics such as submodalities, learning, the "swish" pattern, etc. - keeping in mind how much of our experience is objective, and how much is subjective. Better yet, having pointed out that the majority of our experience subjective - it goes on to explain how we can radically change our lives for the better by "reprogramming" the bits we don't like.

Personally I found this to be an excellent book on the subject, with plenty of amusing and relevant cartoons by Gustav Russ Youngreen, and practical exercises and demonstrations throughout.

With regard to the difficulties mentioned by other reviewers, I would say that there are plenty of guys doing what Abby describes who wouldn't know NLP from a hole in the ground.
It is also worth pointing out that NLP is, after all, just another tool. And like any other tool, *some* people are bound to misuse it.

As for whether you can become proficient in NLP just by attending one or two trainings and reading some books, I agree - you can't.
And if you tell yourself that you don't understand, then you won't (that, too, is "reprogramming"!)

Like any other subject, you will only "learn" NLP when you "do" it. So anyone who thinks that reading this book, or any other, will make them into a master communicator overnight would probably be better off saving their money.

For readers who take the book in the spirit in which it was written, on the other hand, I'd guess you may find this a very enjoyable and beneficial addition to your bookshelf.Using Your Brain--For a Change: Neuro-Linguistic Programming Overview

NLP Coaching: An Evidence-Based Approach for Coaches, Leaders and Individuals ReviewThis book provides an excellent context for understanding NLP from a coaching perspective. A 'must read' for coaches, HR professionals, organisations who use coaching as a people development tool, and any individual who wants to understand coaching from an evidence based perspective.
The book evaluates NLP from an enquirer perspective, addressing three fundamental areas: what is NLP based coaching and how does it relate to wider industry standards for coaching; evidence based NLP and best practice and how it relates to other applied psychologies; the researcher practitioner and recent developments.
Susie's writing is enjoyable and is balanced between providing the evidence base with practical examples and a thorough knowledge of NLP and Coaching.NLP Coaching: An Evidence-Based Approach for Coaches, Leaders and Individuals OverviewNeuro-linguistic programming (NLP) has become a common approach in the coaching industry, but many are still skeptical about it being a substantive and coherent methodology. This book is the first to look at NLP coaching as an evidence-based discipline. Susie Linder-Pelz describes how NLP coaching works, using examples and case studies to highlight what distinguishes it from other coaching approaches. She briefs readers on the theoretical underpinnings of NLP, and she explains which aspects of NLP can be backed with evidence and which aspects are not yet substantiated. A set of research questions helps coaches understand when and how to use NLP.

Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy: A Postmodern Perspective (Advancing Theory in Therapy) ReviewI enjoyed this book immensely because it is both scholarly and practical. First Lisa breaks new ground in NLP by explicitly linking practice to underlying principles. Following that she discusses in considerable detail the relationship between neurolinguistic psychotherapy and other psychological theories and therapeutic approaches. She provides current neuroscientific support for neurolinguistic psychotherapy, along with explanations of the language components and the meaning of `programming' in neurolinguistic programming. There is a fascinating chapter on the variety of ways in which NLP can address deeply unconscious beliefs and unwanted emotions and thus can resolve developmental deficits. Throughout the book Lisa illustrates with case study vignettes and, in addition, she devotes a chapter to the actual practice of this mode of therapy. This is such a rich book that it invites careful and repeated reading. It will appeal to students, teachers, practitioners and researchers of NLP and change work.Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy: A Postmodern Perspective (Advancing Theory in Therapy) OverviewNeurolinguistic Psychotherapy offers a unique and exciting postmodern perspective on an advancing model of therapy. It places neurolinguistic psychotherapy in context and considers the history of NLP and its relationship to psychotherapy. Presented as an effective model for facilitating neurological change through the therapeutic relationship, this book challenges therapists to incorporate a psychodynamic approach within their work.In addition the book also presents:A model of the developing personality and the relationship to attachment theory and emerging theories of neuroscience.A discussion of the linguistic components of NLP and the effectiveness of utilising the language patterns offered by NLP.A challenge to neurolinguistic psychotherapists - asking them to consider the benefits of including relational approaches to therapy above that offered by a programmatic model of change. This book will be of great interest to all psychotherapeutic practitioners and trainers, students and academics.

The Big Book of NLP, Expanded: 350+ Techniques, Patterns & Strategies of Neuro Linguistic Programming ReviewI used the ideas and techniques in this book for the last six months and got a lot out of it...
First and most important - it's down to earth. It's easy to read and understand, no jargon and no space fillers.
I use NLP for my own personal development goals, and occasionally to help out a friend in need. You can imagine, having this "cookbook" of self-help techniques is very helpful.
I am not interested in starting a practice as a practitioner of NLP or a corporate trainer, so I see no good reason in paying 6,500 euro for those weekend training programs.
I only want to "fine tune" myself, to forget a few bad habits and to learn a few new skills faster. In improving myself, I take Tony Robbins' advice:
"We all know that if we flip the switch, the light will go on or off. We don't need to know how the electricity supplies power and how the bulb converts that power into light. Most of us just need to know that it'll work. Don't waste time trying to understand everything, life's too short."
I just wanted to switch on the lights! This book helps me do that, again and again. I do not spend time on theories, I just try out ideas and enjoy the results.
NLP is not complicated, and if you're interested in trying it out and even change a habit or two - go for the techniques, follow the step by step instructions, and you'll get results.
The hardest part of reading NLP books is choosing the right one. I needed a simple practical reference to "everything NLP", and this is simply the best one out there. I recommend. The Big Book of NLP, Expanded: 350+ Techniques, Patterns & Strategies of Neuro Linguistic Programming Overview"A short NLP seminar will cost you at least $4,500. In this book you invest less than $0.25 per NLP technique, that can literally change your life. That's a bargain!" --Thomas Landmark, Revolucni NLP

Turtles All the Way Down: Prerequisites to Personal Genius ReviewHad I known beforehand this was a transcription of a 5 day seminar, I probably would not have purchased the book. With that said, I'm glad its now part of my library. The 3 1/2 stars is only due to fact that this type of book is the kind that is best suited for a detailed Table of Contents and/or index. There is no index here, and the contents page is limited to what day of the seminar they were in.
The content is excellent however. To quote the back of the book: "Rich with humor and metaphors from other cultures and disciplines, 'Turtles All the Way Down' develops the characteristics common to the geniuses whose patterning formed the initial body of NLP techniques. ... You will learn how the skills of genius are readily available for cultivating your own personal excellence in a way that is respectful of the power of the unconscious."
One thing I especially liked was the liberal use of ideas and quotes from (most notably) Carlos Castenada, and Gregory Bateson among others, to add to the understanding of the material. In one section when discussing the Incompleteness Theorem for Representation; Grinder goes from Gregory Bateson, to Kurt Godel, to Ken Kesey, Neal Cassady and finally Monty Python's Flying Circus to discuss the concept. Lets just say its not been a boring read.Turtles All the Way Down: Prerequisites to Personal Genius OverviewRich with humor and metaphors from other cultures and disciplines, Turtles develops the characteristics common to the geniuses whose patterning formed the initial body of NLP techniques. You will learn how these skills are readily available for cultivating your own personal genius in a way that is respectful of the power of the unconscious. This book is the documentary, with added notes and stories, of Grinder/Delozier's five day seminar called "Prerequisites To Personal Genius". John Grinder and Judith Delozier get their participants to think about the structure of thinking; how our thought patterns become our beliefs about reality. The limitations of those thought patterns can be overcome, however, when a person is able to expand his/her perceptual filters and model "geniuses" -- this is the process which has been shown in the lives of people such as Einstein, Milton Erickson, and Gregory Bateson.Throughout the book, the authors challenge you to reexamine the structures of your "mind" and the ways that all parts can be integrated in an internal dance.

Frogs into Princes : Neuro Linguistic Programming ReviewFor what it is this book is a 10, and it's a hoot to read as well! Even though it's now over 20 years old this is the first (and best-IMHO) book introducing the still cutting edge technology of human communication and cognition - Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP™). As far fetched a claim as it may seem, this is surely a seminal book in the field of human communication, linguistics, perception, cognition and psychology. The impact of NLP™ is present in all of these fields, often with more than a little kicking and yelling. After reading the book you're sure to understand why - Bandler and Grinder hold very little about traditional approaches and academic thinking as sacred. Although it's actually about a shift in the paradigm of how change can and does occur, it sometimes reads more like an exploration into the world of Svengali like magic and illusion. The material is presented in the form of a transcript of a live training superbly edited by Steve Andreas. The book is an example of 'doing' NLP™ as opposed to 'describing' it. It puts you in the training as Richard and John present it. As the editor of the book states in the forward, keep your mind open as you read because the authors are more often then not doing what they're describing. You'll want to read it with your eyes open - sometimes more easily said then done, since what the authors are doing is often presented in hypnotically engaging language. I've talked to more than one person who kept finding themselves waking up a few hours after having read through a few pages in this book. It is best to read this book as you would a novel, continuing through to the end, rather than trying to figure out or understand an individual section before moving on. The material is written is such a way as to resolve itself as you read. This is an example of "nested loops" a teaching technique Bandler and Grinder use extensively. However you get through it, in the end you'll find your thinking about thinking changed, and the journey as well worthwhile as the destination. As they say themselves, this book has nothing to do with theory or even the truth about things - instead it's "all about what works." --This text refers to the Paperback edition.Frogs into Princes : Neuro Linguistic Programming Overview

The Structure of Magic, Vol. 1: A Book About Language and Therapy ReviewThe Structure of Magic is an apt title for this book. It is in fact about the magic that occurs when extraordinarily gifted therapists interact with clients. It's a bit hard to read and dense otherwise I'd give it a 10. Using unique and powerful frames of communication these individuals are able to create transformational change within their clients worldview. Bandler and Grinder unpack the elements and structure of these frames of communication using sophisticated and sometimes profound linguist tools. They treat the communication as an algorithm of both the verbal and non-verbal components that form the cognitive structure of the worldview which is in place and from which the communication flows. Then they reveal how the 'magicians' of therapy they've modeled design and implement transformational interventions. The premise they offer and support is that in the very structure of the language used, the entirety of the worldview is present - as well as the keys to creating rapid and lasting transformational change. They present an entire heuristic model of language using this structure to design and implement change of this magnitude as well. In the process of doing this they also reveal some keys to self-examination that serve to expose the worldview the reader is operating from when the reader applies them targeting themselves as the subject. Overall the foundation material that led to the development of NLPtm is present in this book and its sister volume Structure of Magic II. With this material, that forms what the authors call the Meta-Model(tm), and the material in Patterns of Milton H. Erickson Vols. I & II, the basis of conversational hypnosis, the authors define NLPtm as a distinct and operational technology of its own. I highly recommend this book and the others mentioned here as the background material to what the authors present in their books, Frogs into Princes and Tranceformations. NLPtm is and experiential technology and as such operates within the real time process, Frogs and Tra! nceformations offer the reader some insight to this experience. Structure of Magic I & II, and Patterns I & II are the linear supporting material to what happens in these experiences and how they are designed and implemented. It is for this reason as a trainer of NLPtm I find that they are best read in reverse chronological order starting with Frogs into Princes, then Tranceformations followed by Structure of Magic I and Patterns I in order. Enjoy the material and most of all try applying it if you really want to gain a sense of what Bandler and Grinder created ...The Structure of Magic, Vol. 1: A Book About Language and Therapy OverviewThese seminal works in neurolinguistic programming (NLP) help therapists understand how people create inner models of the world to represent their experience and guide their behavior. Volume I describes the Meta Model, a framework for comprehending the structure of language; Volume II applies NLP theory to nonverbal communication.

The Structure of Magic II: A Book About Communication and Change ReviewIf you are interested in knowing how psychiatrists effect life altering change, then this book is for you. As you may know, the authors modeled the life altering strategies of successful psychiatrists, such as Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls, and Virginia Satir. These models became the basis of what we now know as nlp.
I was rather intrigued, when reading this book to notice a strategy of Virginia Satir. In one of her dialogues with a patient, when the patient explains a perceived issue with another person, she repeatedly challenges his thinking by asking 'Are you a mind reader?'
I now ask myself the same question on a regular basis. Sometimes, I ask other people that question too. If you think about it, that is a very good perception changing question unless, of course, you are a mind reader.
Another book I recommend in this field is Mind-lines: Lines For Changing Mindsby L Michael Hall, which has an extensive list of change patterns, and My voice will go with you, which is a book of the therapeutic teaching tales of Milton Erickson. I hope you find this review helpful. The Structure of Magic II: A Book About Communication and Change OverviewThese seminal works in neurolinguistic programming (NLP) help therapists understand how people create inner models of the world to represent their experience and guide their behavior.
