The New Complete Coffee Book: A Gourmet Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Cooking Review"The New Complete Coffee Book" is an excellent coffee table book on coffee. It tells you most of what you need to know, and is impressively presented in a way which would look good on any coffee table.
Nonetheless, this book could, I feel, have done with a few more basic bits of information. I would have enjoyed a section on how to make basic coffee (ie latte, cappucino, machiato) - even if these are considered 'simple' coffee making skills. Also, a bit more information on the different aspects of different coffee region produce would have been good. Furthermore, there is a section on savoury coffee meals (lamb with coffee rub, anyone?) which can at best be described as superflous.
On the whole, though, the book is pretty damn good, and certainly worthy of purchase. I am very happy with it.The New Complete Coffee Book: A Gourmet Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Cooking OverviewNow with a fresh new cover, the New Complete Coffee Book is filled to the brim on the worlds favorite beverage. Covering the latest in the coffee craze, it includes dozens of recipes for every coffee drink imaginable, from the sternly efficient Espresso (the rocket fuel of coffees) to the indulgent Cappuccino Borgia Milkshake. Author Sara Perry gives us the 411 on coffee history, production, and lore. If that werent enough, she adds 40 recipes for delicious, internationally inspired treats (both sweets and savories) using coffee as a main ingredient. Paired with smart-looking photographs, this is a handsome exploration of a precious commodity and the hundreds of ways to enjoy it.

Making Great Cowboy Coffee: A Guide to Brewing Cowboy Coffee at Home and on the Campfire ReviewThe mystery of making great coffee is revealed in a entertaining, straigth forward book. It's really all about the "science" of why coffee either tastes great....or not! Since "cowboy coffee" is usually associated with camping and camping oft times is associated with other than sea level altitudes, it would have been nice to include a short table showing boiling temps at different altitudes but you can find them online easily enough. Otherwise, a couple of dollars well spent if you get out there amongst it all and still want great coffee. I'd have given it 5 stars if the altitude chart was included. Be careful, you are going to wonder why you spent so much on that ridiculous coffee maker of yours!Making Great Cowboy Coffee: A Guide to Brewing Cowboy Coffee at Home and on the Campfire OverviewMaster the art of making great cowboy coffee in a few easy steps!Despite what you have heard, cowboy coffee is a truly great tasting coffee that rivals the best of brewing methods. And because cowboy coffee requires only the most basic of equipment, it is ultra portable and ultra simple. It can be made anywhere you can boil water--at home or on the camp trail. Making Great Cowboy Coffee shows you how to:
Select the perfect pot for making cowboy coffee
Separate your drinking coffee from those stubborn coffee grounds with ease
Brew your coffee for optimal extraction and maximum flavor
Use just the right grind to add body, flavor, and enhance the "mouth feel" of your coffee
Make a signature cup of cowboy coffee that is as good as any coffee, anywhere
Whether you want to make great tasting coffee on the camp trail or at home in an heirloom enameled coffee pot, Making Great Cowboy Coffee is for you. This book will show you how to brew a great pot of coffee any place you can boil water.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coffee and Tea ReviewIf you've ever wanted to know everything there is to know about coffee and tea, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coffee & Tea is certainly a good resource. From growing locations to harvesting methods, processing to transport, home-roasting to blending, and even the best way to pull a shot of espresso, Travis Arndorfer and Kristine Hansen explore the world of these gourmet beverages from start to finish.
For sheer volume and completeness of information this book is a winner; I learned an incredible amount of wonderful history and useful information from it. For liveliness of writing--an important consideration in the long-running "Complete Idiot's Guides" line, which strives to make often-complex subjects accessible to the general public--it does a solid job, although it's hard to go step-by-step through the complexities of pulling espresso, properly tamping grounds, and cleaning an espresso machine without things getting a tad boring.
I have only one major reservation regarding this book, and it was enough to bring my rating down a bit. The authors manage to convey the impression through all of their detailed information that unless you're buying incredibly fresh beans, grinding them with an expensive grinder, brewing them with an expensive brewer, and preferably roasting green beans yourself in small batches with your own roaster, then you're simply not drinking good coffee. I honestly couldn't look through their recommendations and find a middle ground that I'd consider affordable that they'd consider drinking good coffee.
Given the typical market of the CIG books, this seems incongruous. It's one thing to tell you how to spend incrementally more depending on your budget and time available to get the most out of your coffee experience, but this book makes it seem like no one except wealthy, semi-retired folks or professionals who do this for a living can make "good" coffee. That's a shame, because I think it's likely to make a good handful of readers throw up their hands and say "well, if I can't do it right, why bother to go beyond my normal cheap cup and explore any of this at all?"
If you have an interest in the details of coffee and tea I do recommend that you pick up this book. Just make sure you're willing to be a little stubborn in putting aside the authors' overly-restrictive definitions of good coffee, and go with what you feel up to.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coffee and Tea OverviewA freshly brewed introduction to the caffeine subculture. For hot beverage novices and budding baristas, here is an essential introduction to the world of coffee and tea, from a basic history of each product, to advanced tips and tricks for blending, brewing, and using syrups and milk, to recipes from around the world. • Includes information on different types of beans and teas, available brewing equipment, and little-known secrets to making fabulous coffee- and tea-based drinks • Written by food and beverage writers who are experts in the field • Contains the finest recipes from worldwide barista champions

Espresso: Ultimate Coffee, Second Edition ReviewKenneth Davids writes a lot of information on history and the art of making espresso coffee. The only thing that really bothered me was his method of writing. At times it was very clear, then it dropped off when it became more interesting, almost like "running out of room." The section on machines and equipment was fairly good, but it didn't give more details on each type of machine.
The source section was very limited on where to buy machines or coffee. Could have been better at rating coffee and machines.
The book was a little hard to read with very small type, and the monotone brown color of the illustrations.Espresso: Ultimate Coffee, Second Edition OverviewThe popularity of espresso, coffee at its purest and most intense, has grown exponentially in the past decade. In this revised edition of his book on the ultimate coffee, Kenneth Davids provides a lucid, engaging examination of espresso's lore, legend, and culture. A finalist for the James Beard Award upon its original publication. Espresso is the perfect introduction to the world of specialty coffee.

The Joy of Coffee: The Essential Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying - Revised and Updated ReviewLike most caffiene addicts I routinely start my day with a cup of coffee. And since the coffee I made at home was never as good as the coffee I could purchase just about anywhere else I would force myself to drive to a nearby coffee shop no matter how inconvenient or expensive this might be.Since I was devoting a great deal of time and money to this quest I decided to purchase Korby Cummer's The Joy of Coffee thinking that the investment would eventually result in a better home brew. Happily, the plan worked.
"Joy" is an incredibly detailed, thorough book which begins with the author traveling to Costa Rica to pick beans and includes descriptions of the various means of roasting, grinding, and and brewing. There is a chapter on Espresso and another chapter examining the health effects of caffeine. The author spends time demystifying coffee terms and compares coffees from around the world. He writes about the advantages and disadvantages of various coffeepots and includes a source guide and a glossary. But the book is not only comprehensive-- the writing is engaging. Mr. Kummer also includes forty tempting recipes. I baked the "marvelous mocha cupcakes" which the author says are "wonderful"-- sorry, but I didn't think they were better than "very good"-- in fairness the comments "scrumptious" and "amazing" were elicited by two of my friends who generously agreed to sample them. They lasted one night. I also baked his "unbeatable biscotti". They were excellent-- very crispy and light-- they lasted two nights. Naturally, I drink them with coffee I brewed from my new pot-- at home.
An excellent companion piece is "Glass Paper Beans" which eloquently describes something we would normally take for granted each day, in this case lingering over a cup of coffee at the local cafe. The author, Leah Hager Cohen, describes what is really involved when we sip our brew while browsing the local paper. She introduces us to the the family who picks the beans, the man who cuts the trees to provide the wood pulp for the newspaper and a woman who works at the glass factory and helps to make the glass that holds the coffee. After reading Ms. Cohen you will never take your daily cup for granted and Mr. Kummer will tell you how to fix that cup in your own home. The Joy of Coffee: The Essential Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying - Revised and Updated Overview

Home Coffee Roasting, Revised, Updated Edition: Romance and Revival ReviewUpdate: March 1, 2006
In June, 2001, I wrote about "Home Coffee Roasting":
"This book is worth several times its purchase price for the two-page roasting chart alone. As a technically-oriented (read: geek) amateur roaster with three (3) roasters (a Hearthware Precision, an Alpenrost, and the fabulous Sonofresco fluid bed) I am constantly referring to this book to improve my art and understanding.
But, amazingly, the book -- only a few years in print -- is now dated, because the equipment options for the home coffee roaster have increased so much. My three roasters (or the types they represent) are not covered. That's the only reason that I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. But if you roast coffee at home -- regardless of your equipment -- you need this book.
What else is missing? I'd love to see a table in the appendix covering the top 50 (or so) growing regions and rating the AVERAGE bean on acidity, sweetness, body, finish, etc, so that one has a clue where to begin when making a blend. The professional coffee roaster is cupping samples all day long, and quickly learns the characteristics of the world's coffees. But we amateurs, buying 1, 2, or 5 lbs at a time could use a secret decoder ring that would tell us in advance what variety we should order that has a good chance of rounding out that blend that is "not quite there yet." Short of that, David's excellent narrative coverage in the book of different coffee characteristics will have to do."
With the release of the "Revised, Updated Edition", the book no longer merits the caveats I described. In particular, Davids has meticulously covered the wide range of available home -- as well as cafe or semi-professional -- roasting equipment, and has excellent coverage of the growing availability of equipment and green coffee sources via the Internet. After 5 years of blending and roasting many pounds per week, and as a writer, I probably could by now have almost written this, and yet I found it endlessly entertaining and informative. Someone new to the hobby will, as I said in 2001, find it indispensable.
Nice job, Ken. Here is your fifth star: "*"Home Coffee Roasting, Revised, Updated Edition: Romance and Revival OverviewIn the past decade, home coffee roasting has gone from a small but growing trend to an increasingly mainstream audience.Still, for many in the current generation of coffee lovers, roasting remains a mysterious process. In this completely revised, expanded edition of his classic Home Coffee Roasting, James Beard Award nominated Kenneth Davids reveals the secrets to simple, quality home roasting.Home Coffee Roasting provides insightful, easy-to-follow guidelines for every step in the process:· The new home roasters: how to evaluate and use them· Aresource guide for green beans and home-roasting equipment· Best techniques for storing green beans· Tips on perfecting a roast· How to create your own blendWith David's charming blend of commentary on coffee, the history of roasting and connoisseurship, how-to instructions, copious illustrations, and an invaluable resource guide, this revised, expanded edition of Home Coffee Roasting is the one necessary book for every true coffee lover.

Coffee: A Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying, Fifth Edition ReviewCOFFEE : A Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying. Fifth Edition. By Kenneth Davids. 279 pp. New York : St. Martin's Griffin,
2001. ISBN 0-312-24665-X (pbk).
This is a book for those who, after years of slurping what all too often passes for 'coffee,' and what far too many establishments continue to pretend is 'coffee,' have been blessed by a coffee epiphany. It is for those, in other words, who have finally realized what a sensuous, ravishing, and complete experience a perfect cup of _real_ coffee is, and who would like to learn how to duplicate that experience at will in the comfort of their own home. Brewing up a cup of coffee may seem to most of us to be a relatively simple matter, but what we quickly learn from this book is that, far from being simple, selecting the right type, form, and state of coffee and correctly employing the methods that will produce that perfect cup demand real knowledge and skill; we learn, in short, that a true understanding of coffee opens up an area of connoisseurship every bit as big, or even bigger, than that of wine itself.
Davids' book is truly comprehensive. Besides giving us a fairly detailed history of coffee, from its origins in Arabia (or Ethiopia) through to its latest manifestation in the flavored espressos of the modern mall, the book includes chapters on Buying It, Tasting It, Roasting It, Grinding It, Brewing It, and Serving It. Detailed information is given on the special qualities and characteristics of all coffees of the many regions of the world which produce it (Guatemala; Honduras; Costa Rica; Jamaica; Puerto Rico; Haiti; Colombia; Peru; Brazil; Yemen; Ethiopia; Kenya; Uganda; India; Sumatra; Java; New Guinea; Hawaii, etc.), and on the merits and demerits of the many different methods of brewing and the best utensils for each of them (Open-Pot; French Press or Plunger; Drip Brewing (both with and without filters); Flip-Drip or Neapolitan Macchinetta; Pumping Percolator (now passe and the best way to ruin coffee); Filter-Drip, automatic and otherwise; Concentrate; Middle Eastern or Turkish; Soluble or Instant, etc.). There is also a very full discussion of espresso and just why it produces the ultimate cup.
If you are anything like me you'll quickly realize that you have been doing many things wrong and will be seized with the urge, not only to start using better coffee, but also to start brewing it properly. Although acquiring your very own roasting machine or espresso machine may be a little too ambitious for most of us, you may decide that bringing your coffee at least one stage closer to perfection by buying a grinder and grinding the beans yourself is probably a good idea. If you do so decide, Davids will inform you just why a manual is preferable to an electric grinder (it generates less of the heat that disperses the volatile substances that give flavor to coffee), and where you can buy a good grinder if one isn't locally available. His book, besides containing much else (coffee chemistry, maps, photographs, coffee glossary, etc.), concludes with a list of companies which sell a wide range of the best coffees and coffee paraphernalia and equipment.
There are few perfect pleasures in life. Davids is to be thanked for teaching us how not to spoil one of them.Coffee: A Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying, Fifth Edition OverviewNow in its latest revised edition, Kenneth Davids's comprehensive and entertaining Coffee: A Guide to Buying, Brewing and Enjoying, remains an invaluable resource for anyone who truly enjoys a good cup of coffee. It features updated information and definitions, a history of coffee culture, tips on storing and brewing, and other essential advice designed to improve the coffee experience.Coffee lovers everywhere will welcome this lively, complete guide to the fascinating world of America's national beverage.

Through the Grinder (Coffeehouse Mysteries, No. 2) ReviewAfter divorcing her husband Matteo, Clare took their daughter to New Jersey where they went suburban for a decade until Joy accepts a school in Manhattan. Clare eagerly agrees to a job offer by her former mother- in-law in the family owned business The Village Blend so that she can be near Joy. She relocates to a duplex above the store while her daughter and her former mother-in-law hope that is the first step in binging Clare and her ex-husband Matt together.
Clare is more interested in monitoring Joy's men rather than meeting any males for herself. During a social gala hosted above the Village Blend, Clare meets and falls in love with Bruce Bowman; he reciprocates her feelings. Clare's friend Detective Mike Quinn warns her to avoid Bruce because he is the prime suspect in the murders of three women that he knew whose deaths were disguised as suicides. Clare refuses to believe Bruce is capable of homicide and with the help of Matt sets out to affirm her belief.
THROUGH THE GRINDER is a fascinating mystery mostly because readers see the killer's point of view as he strikes at the victims. Though the logic why Bruce is a lead suspect seems thin, Quinn's jealousy forces him to rationalize his opinion. Though the tale takes a little time to introduce the cast once Clare takes Manhattan, readers gain an engrossing amateur sleuth serial killer that stars a brave, quirky heroine.
Harriet Klausner
Through the Grinder (Coffeehouse Mysteries, No. 2) OverviewBusiness is booming at Clare Cosi's Village Blend, until her female customers start to die. Lieutenant Quinn is convinced that someone has an axe to grind, and, unfortunately, his prime suspect is the new man in Clare's life. Now Clare will risk her heart--and her life--to follow the killer's trail to the bitter end.
