Tool & Cutter Sharpening (Workshop Practice) ReviewThis book is aimed at the home workshop metal worker, who does not have access to sophisticated sharpening machinery, and likes to make his/her own jigs and devices.
The writing is clear and understandable, as one would expect from an author who regularly contributes to metal working magazines.
The print, photographs and drawings are smallish, but this 132 page book has a surprisingly large amount of information considering its size.
The plans and instructions are very clear, well explained, and complete. What's more, having made the advanced grinding rest referred to in this book, and detailed in his book "Milling.. A Complete Course", I can confirm that his designs are beautifully engineered, achievable by an interested amateur, and function very well.
There is information on:
sharpening drill bits, lathe tools, screw divers, end mills, slot mills, dovetail bits, wood working tools etc.,
plans and instructions for jigs, rests and other devices;
Recommended.
Tool & Cutter Sharpening (Workshop Practice) OverviewSharpening workshop tools is probably the most diverse of all workshop activities and the one that is least understood by the majority of workshop owners. This is not unreasonable in view of the wide range of equipment suggested for the task, ranging from the complex (typically an industrial tool and cutter grinder) through to the humble off hand grinder. This book illustrates how most sharpening tasks can be carried out using an off hand grinder and a few simply made accessories to a standard comparable to that achieved using much more sophisticated equipment. Follow the instructions in this book and working with blunt tools will be a thing of the past! "The Workshop Practice Series" is the world's leading range of books for model engineers and mechanical crafts: some of the books have been in print for 50 years; most of them still reprint every 18 months. It is fully illustrated step-by-step with photographs and technical drawings.

Woodworker's Guide to Sharpening ReviewJohn English provides here a most thorough treatment of the vagaries of sharpening one's woodworking tools. I've read articles and watched videos here and there, but none have been so clear on the process and the techniques involved as this book is. Definitely worth the price!Woodworker's Guide to Sharpening OverviewStep-by-step expert instructions and visual aids teach woodworkers the characteristics of steel, carbide, and ceramic while showing how to sharpen any device, from planes, chisels, cabinet scrapers, and drill and router bits to saws, axes, knives, and turning and carving tools. Readers will benefit from a detailed discussion on the four types of bench stones as well as a thorough resource of websites and contact information. An additional chapter presenting a peek at the sharpening setups of some of America's best professional woodworkers-including James Krenov, Sam Maloof, and David Marks-is also provided.

The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening ReviewI like this book. I only give it 4 stars cause it is old and not very pretty, but it is very useful. It gave me a new perspective on grinding and sharpening. I am sure there are others, but this works for me. The book outlines and discusses various thoughts on sharpening and picks up apart all kinds of traditional notions that you keep running into when researching sharpening on the web. Yes, it talks a lot about the meat cutting industry, but heck, few places demand better edges. Anything that works for their knives will work for anyone else that needs a sharp knife. It is an old book and you will not leave it on the living room table for decoration. It has basic old illustrations and cheap print on cheap paper, but that doesn't make the contents any less useful. He does promote his approach to sharpening and sells the hones etc. I bought the book and the company's 8 inch 2 hone kit (for dry grinding, nice, no oil, no water, just wash the hones in water after use). I have tried many things over the years to keep things sharp. I read the book a couple of times (which doesn't take long) and then went ahead and worked with the sharpening kit. I ground new edges and sharpened a half dozen kitchen knives, from a cheap Martha Stewart/KMart 3-inch paring knife to 8 inch chef knives (steel Wusthof and Sabatier carbon steel) and long thin dangerous looking Finnish fish fillet knives, and for fun a cheap basic thin bladed kitchen knife I found in the back of a cabinet. Every one of them now easily shaves hair from arms, legs, chin etc. They just glide smoothly through an onion, even with skin on. Very happily applying the same techniques to sharpening my chisels, planes, etc. too. Just make sure to grind until you get the burr on the coarse hone, and use a light touch on the fine hone.
Way cool. After reading the book and getting a couple of good hones you will be able to grind a new edge on any knife in 15-20 minutes. The edge is the kind that you will (carefully) show your friends while asking them if they have ever seen a sharp knife.
"Be careful, I keep my knives sharp. No, I mean really sharp".The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening OverviewUniversally recognized as "The Bible of The Cutting Edge", this book belongs in the library of anyone who is serious about sharpening.Written by Guinness world record holder John Juranitch, it contains all the knowledge and insights gained during his more than 40 years in the sharpening industry. The 145 page book is crammed with photos, illustrations and cutting edge secrets you won't find anywhere else. Its 14 chapters cover topics like how to choose a knife, sharpening theories nad applicaitons, steeling, using a hone and much, much more. You'll get answers to the most asked questions. You'll learn the truth about common myths like why you should never use oil on a hone. And you'll get the insights necessary to put a great edge on knives, axes, fish hooks, arrowheads, chain saws and other tools. It's a history, a handbook, a reference manual that is the simplest, most complete way to give yourself a razor edge on sharpening.

Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Sharpening ReviewI have two books on sharpening. Which is a lot when you consider that sharpening is more of a chore than anything else. But it is a very important chore (second only to sweeping up), and one that can make woodworking a pleasure or a great pain. Until you develop good, disciplined sharpening techniques your work will be spotty at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hand tool purist. But one of the reasons I have so many power planes, routers, and shapers is that, for a long time I was a very mediocre sharpener.
Thomas Lie-Nielson makes some of the finest planes in the world. I have three, and each has proved out its value repeatedly. Much of the reason I bought this book was to see what he had to say, even though my copy of Leonard Lee's 'Complete Guide to Sharpening' has stood me in good stead. Unfortunately, Lie-Nielsen is a much better toolmaker than he is a writer. His presentation is quite dry, and not as detailed as I would have liked. And for some strange reason the photographer managed to 'miss' the action or make it difficult to puzzle out what was happening.
In spite of this, Lie-Nielsen manages to explain somethings that Leonard Lee left out. He also offers more discussion on shaping the steel as well as sharpening it. His section on sharpening axes is a classic of straightforward clarity and brevity, for example. But While I am a fan of Taunton's 'Complete Illustrated' series, this time their offering falls short. Lee's book is half the price and every bit as usefulTaunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Sharpening OverviewAs a toolmaker, Tom Lie-Nielsen brings a special perspective to the subject of sharpening. In this must-have reference, the author covers all types of sharpening equipment and methods of sharpening hand tools. Over 700 color photographs and illustrations are included, along with information on sharpening power tool blades and bits.

Sharpening with Waterstones: A Perfect Edge in 60 Seconds ReviewI've been getting into sharpening over the last year, since I've started using handplanes seriously. I started with the scary sharp (sandpaper) method, but recently thought I'd try out waterstones. I already had a couple of books that discuss sharpening - Garret Hack's "The Handplane Book" and Leonard Lee's "The Complete Guide to Sharpening".
I was having a little trouble with my new waterstones, so I thought Kirby's book might give me some insight since it's specifically about waterstones. I should add that I'm not a big Kirby fan, having found his articles in Fine Woodworking to be highly opionated and non-empathetic with beginners.
This book is much the same as his articles. He dismisses the use of sharpening jigs, does not discuss any of the problems you might face with waterstones or even sharpening in general, and doesn't offer much detail or reasoning to back up his recommendations. I could go on, but basically I found this book to essentially be a subset of the sharpening information contained in Hack's and Lee's books, which are significantly more detailed and contain a wider breadth of information.Sharpening with Waterstones: A Perfect Edge in 60 Seconds OverviewSteps for putting perfect edges on planes, chisels, knives, and carving tools.

The Perfect Edge: The Ultimate Guide to Sharpening for Woodworkers (Popular Woodworking) ReviewAll woodworkers know Ron Hock. He makes and sells great blades for planes and knives. If you do not yet know him, this book is an introduction and a good way to benefit from his experience.
He starts by explaining what steel really is: a combination of iron with a small percentage of carbon. Then he explains the different properties of steel alloys. He describes how steel is made, forged, heat-treated and quenched. He explains how all of those operations affect the steel that tools are made from. Without too much boring background, you can quickly learn what took me decades to learn: how different steels affect tool performance.
Some readers may find this too academic, but I assure you of two things: 1- this is the most "user friendly" introduction to applied metallurgy I have ever seen, and 2-you cannot possibly understand sharpening without knowing at least a little about steel.
If you just love tools and are considering which tools to buy, then metallurgy is fundamental to spending wisely. For that reason alone, I can recommend this book because Ron's knowledge can save you THOUSANDS! (no exaggeration)
Woodworkers are bombarded with ads for a bewildering array of gadgets, machines, abrasives and "sharpening systems." Which one is the right investment? Ron explains them ALL and divides them into categories anyone can understand. You will have to "read between the lines" a bit though. The publishers are wary of offending their advertisers. So Ron must temper his critiques with practical compromises. He can't come outright and say, "this is the best way to sharpen planes" or "This system sucks." He must offer alternatives and show pictures of all manufacturer's products. The reader is left to use Ron's impartial facts and make his own decisions. If you do not like to think for yourself, or rather someone just tell you what to buy, you won't like this book. If you are capable of culling useful facts and applying them, you will gain immensely and save boatloads of cash on tools AND sharpening gear.
BTW: if you prefer to have someone just show you a single system that works well, Get David Charlesworth's book. His system works pretty well for most woodworkers, beginners and pros alike. Though expensive and slow, it is not too expensive or too slow. For those who have less patience and want to just "pay the fee and get on with it" David's way is faster. Ron's book is for those of us who are still curious and want to know everything about the subject because we are always looking for more efficient or less expensive methods. I have respect for the Old School Skills and know them intimately, but even my Father (born in 1898) would appreciate Ron's practical modern attitude. Also, Ron explains why David's famous "ruler trick" can work for plane blades but is not ideal for chisels.
So if you are new and uninformed, or experienced yet confused by the bewildering array of manufacturer's claims and products, this book will end that confusion quickly. The book is worth the cost.
Metallurgy can definitely seem a dreary arcane subject. (I fell asleep during several college lectures) But Ron's focused goal of sharpening keeps avid woodworkers intrigued. Obviously, Ron has spent many years answering woodworkers questions about tool steel in relation to sharpening, so in this work he culled together answers to most woodworker's FAQs. By providing information that relates directly to tool steel, he dramatically shortens your learning curve. I wish i could have had this book 30 years ago. It would have saved me so much time and a ton of homework drudgery.
What I love about the metallurgical truth Mr Hock presents: He debunks common marketing myths about various tool steels. What steel is better? A2 or O1? Why not use HSS or M2 steel for plane blades? Why might a chisel benefit from a different steel than a plane? How flat does a plane's sole have to be? How much time should sharpening take? What IS sharpness? How sharp does this tool really need to be?
Ron explains what truly experienced, over-educated (and kinda geeky) woodworkers already know, but he presents it in a way that is neither insulting to the reader nor confrontational to the manufacturers.
Speaking of manufacturers: It is painfully obvious that the publishing editors of Popular Woodworking kowtow to their advertisers. This glossy, full color tome is FULL of product photos for every type of sharpening jig, machine, gadget. I do not believe this is criminal, but it does add too much "advertising fluff" to an otherwise edifying concise work.
To be truly objective and honest, any book on sharpening should show the results of the various jigs and sharpening systems. Well, at the very end of the book, Ron does exactly that.
Without flatly stating "this system is better or worse", he shows us micro-photographs of cutting edges taken with a scanning electron microscope. Ron (and / or his publishers) actually commissioned Steve Anderson of Sonoma State university to photograph cutting edges after they had been sharpened by various abrasives and methods. If you want to SEE the "plane" truth, get this book solely for the last chapter. It is worth the price of admission JUST for that.
There is one GREAT new tip I got from this book about sharpening scissors; On page 197 Ron shows us a unique new trick for sharpening (actually honing) a pair of scissors with a common tool found in every woodworker's shop: a burnisher.
The tittle of this VERY valuable trick is "HANDY TRICK, sharpen your scissors in three seconds with your burnisher." I sat bolt-upright when I saw this. The single photograph explains how to do it. I immediately went to my kitchen where we have numerous pairs of dull scissors. (A wife, three sons and one daughter can ruin scissor as fast as I buy them.) I tried it. It WORKS!
Do you realize how valuable this one tip is? Most people use scissors in the office or kitchen everyday, or at least once a week. How much frustration does it cause you when they stop cutting well? How much money would you save if you could quickly renew the cutting edge on every pair of scissors in your house a dozen times?
Well, I conservatively figure that in our house, I could save at least $20 a year... not enough to retire with, but that would buy a round of beers or certainly defray the cost of this book. When the twenty pairs of cheap scissors get dull, (or lost) my beloved family members sneak into my shop and "borrow" my good scissors. They inevitably dull the edge on my good pairs, I have to spend infuriated time honing the edges again. For this single tip alone, Ron has done as much for my blood pressure as my nightly glass of wine. THANKS RON!
If you visit his website or buy is products, you'll see Ron Hock is a likable, easy-goin', down-to-Earth guy. He is also very knowledgeable! His writing style is easy-to-read and to-the-point. His video presentations on Plane Kits and other subjects are also succinct, although he made not be an on-screen "natural." ;-) He even brings some humor to these otherwise tedious subjects.
Although I could do without the manufacturer / advertiser "fluff", this book is full of solid crucial information if you want to know about sharpening tools. Although I already had a practical education in metallurgy, Ron's unique contribution to literature makes that otherwise dreary subject interesting and pointedly useful to woodworkers. The super-microscopic photos at the end of the book tell the truth, but you have to look for it; the truth doesn't shout out at you so as to avoid offending valuable sponsors.
Even though i already knew much of the material herein, I am delighted i got it as a useful reference for long-forgotten steel-science, and new emerging technology. It is surely one of the most thorough books on sharpening; one of the few that really educates from a foundation in metallurgy. Anyone who owns ANY tools, (including kitchen knives and scissors) will learn something valuable they can use for the rest of their lives.
And for me personally, the "three-second scissor trick" is worth the price. For that alone, Ron deserves some kind of medal... (maybe a "Domestic Tranquility Peace Prize?) Who knows? Some family with many dull-scissor problems might even be spared divorce!
Now, the only remaining question: "From what type of metal shall Ron's medal be made?" A2 or O1? ;-)The Perfect Edge: The Ultimate Guide to Sharpening for Woodworkers (Popular Woodworking) OverviewNearly every operation in woodworking uses a piece of steel between the woodworker and the wood. This steel needs to be cared for and sharpened for the best results. "The Perfect Edge" is an up-to-date book on sharpening every woodworking tool, using the latest sharpening stones, tools and techniques. The author brings more than twenty-five years of experience, working with demanding customers and staying on top of the latest trends.

The Complete Guide to Sharpening ReviewOoooh what a book ...
All the positive reviews made me want to know more, so I asked about it at a local woodworking shop and they said, "This is THE best book on sharpening."
It is essential to have sharp tools, I do all my work with handtools but the book goes into great detail on ALL tools, machines, different shapes of tools, the advantages of different techniques ... great detail, but it is also concise, VERY easy to read and understand, and has excellent placement of photos within the text - if you are reading about something on page 30 the pictures will be on page 30, not page 29, not page 35. Also the large pages are broken up nicely with tidbits of fascinating historical and scientific information. In parts, I actually laughed out loud!
There are electron microscope photographs of the edges of blades that have been sharpened using various methods. You can actually see the effects ... you will gain appreciation of lapping and rust prevention ... you will know how to select good tools, good sharpening aids ... you will learn about the structure of wood and how to cut with a blade.
Part of the way through it I thought, "this is great, but I wish it told me how to sharpen my kitchen knives" - wholah! in a few pages it did, it showed me how to use that stupid thing that came with the set of knives, and the method worked very well.
I could not be more pleased with this book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in sharpening, especially woodworkers, these are essential skills. Sharp tools will enhance your entire woodwork experience. You will produce finer work with greater ease, even if you use mostly power tools.
I give it 6 stars out of 5.
If it had all colour photos and was bound in leather, I would give it 10 out of 5 AND it would be a fantastic coffee table book as well (warning: that does not mean it is insubstantial, just that many non-woodworking visitors would very much enjoy it)The Complete Guide to Sharpening OverviewLee, a well-known tool manufacturer, covers the practical and technical information to sharpen tools quickly, efficiently and safely. Descriptive photos, clear line drawings and step-by-step instructions show exactly how to improve the performance and safety of any cutting tool. 255 photos.
