The Big Roads: The Untold Story of the Engineers, Visionaries, and Trailblazers Who Created the American Superhighways ReviewEarl Swift has written a marvelous book about the US interstate road system and the men - and there were a lot of them - behind the scenes, in "The Big Roads".
Most people seem to think that the US Interstate system was devised and begun during the Eisenhower administration. It was Eisenhower who approved and began the billions dollar project but planning had begun years before, as the automobile designs improved and costs went down, and people-in-cars took to the roads. At first, cars were used basically to go short distance, but as the 1900's turned into the 1910's, visionaries began to see the need for roads - and good roads - to stretch across the United States. Various government and private companies began working on developing a nationwide system, basically based on the upgrading of already established roads. State governments would approve upgrades in their own states, but there was no country-wide plan. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's plans continued to be made but not necessarily implemented. Notice was taken of the autobahn system being developed AND built in Germany. Strange how those beautifully developed four lane highways went out to the country's borders and not from city to city within Germany... Strange.
After WW2, the US government realised they had to begin building the Interstate system. Added cartage of goods and materiel during war-time had shown how inadequate US road system truly was. It was under Eisenhower, who, curiously had been part of a government study as an Army officer in the 1930's of the country's transportation system, that the national United States Interstate system was finally developed, approved, and built. Begun in the 1950's, roads are still being built and fixed today.
But with the approval of the Interstate system came the problems inherent in building it. Very little problems with going through the countrysides, but as urban planners and transportation planners began to clash as large interstate highways were being designed to cut through urban areas. Baltimore is a prime example of the problems encountered as the need for highways displaced entire neighborhoods.
Earl Swift has really done a great job producing a readable, thoughtful study of the Interstate system. The history of the roads and the problems we now face as a country as our infrastructure begins to stress in dangerous ways. I can really recommend this book. The Big Roads: The Untold Story of the Engineers, Visionaries, and Trailblazers Who Created the American Superhighways Overview

Machine Shop Training Course, Vol. 2 ReviewI have both volume 1 and volume 2. Volume 1 is excellent...probably one of the best out there for lathe work. Volume 2 is pretty much useless for most people. Unless you are going to be working with very large high end specialized milling machines you won't find much of use here. The second book doesn't really look like it was intended as a continuation of the first book...almost two completely different books rather than volume 1 and 2.Machine Shop Training Course, Vol. 2 OverviewCovers fundamental principles; methods of adjusting and using different types of machine tools - with typical examples of:
work-measuring instruments and gauges
cutting screw threads by different processes
thread grinding
gear cutting
precision toolmaking methods
typical shop problems with solutions
miscellaneous facts relating to the art of machine construction and much, much more

Tool & Cutter Sharpening (Workshop Practice) ReviewThis book is aimed at the home workshop metal worker, who does not have access to sophisticated sharpening machinery, and likes to make his/her own jigs and devices.
The writing is clear and understandable, as one would expect from an author who regularly contributes to metal working magazines.
The print, photographs and drawings are smallish, but this 132 page book has a surprisingly large amount of information considering its size.
The plans and instructions are very clear, well explained, and complete. What's more, having made the advanced grinding rest referred to in this book, and detailed in his book "Milling.. A Complete Course", I can confirm that his designs are beautifully engineered, achievable by an interested amateur, and function very well.
There is information on:
sharpening drill bits, lathe tools, screw divers, end mills, slot mills, dovetail bits, wood working tools etc.,
plans and instructions for jigs, rests and other devices;
Recommended.
Tool & Cutter Sharpening (Workshop Practice) OverviewSharpening workshop tools is probably the most diverse of all workshop activities and the one that is least understood by the majority of workshop owners. This is not unreasonable in view of the wide range of equipment suggested for the task, ranging from the complex (typically an industrial tool and cutter grinder) through to the humble off hand grinder. This book illustrates how most sharpening tasks can be carried out using an off hand grinder and a few simply made accessories to a standard comparable to that achieved using much more sophisticated equipment. Follow the instructions in this book and working with blunt tools will be a thing of the past! "The Workshop Practice Series" is the world's leading range of books for model engineers and mechanical crafts: some of the books have been in print for 50 years; most of them still reprint every 18 months. It is fully illustrated step-by-step with photographs and technical drawings.

Planning and Installing Sustainable Onsite Wastewater Systems ReviewI used this book for projects in southern Africa including an ecolodge, low-cost housing, and general consulting. It is exceptional because it includes both technical guidelines for the environmental engineer as well as photos and CAD sketches for the builder. Various products are also mentioned. This book would serve anyone working in remote areas of the world, where limited skills, tools and materials are available, but I think it could also be valuable to people practicing in industrialized countries too.
-Chris Rollins, PE (Alaska and Colorado, USA)Planning and Installing Sustainable Onsite Wastewater Systems Overview

Machine Shop Trade Secrets: A Guide to Manufacturing Machine Shop Practices ReviewThis has to be the most unusual book I have ever read. Each chapter contains a number of separate numbered paragraphs. Each paragraph contains the author's thoughts about some specific aspect of machining. This organizational format is almost bizarre, but somehow strangely effective. This book has the best description I have ever seen on what cutters are best used for particular functions. I also really enjoyed the do's and don'ts on NC machining. I've gone through it twice now in one week and will probably read it a third time before long.
This is not the usual textbook on machining with numerous pages devoted to cutting theory that somehow never quite gets to the point of telling you what feed and speed to use to accomplish a specific task. Nor does it have an entire chapter telling you what a lathe is and how the various parts are named. The utility of many such treatises is probably exhausted once past the point of contributing to some academician's case for being awarded tenure. This one is really different. It really has a lot of good advice that's applicable to virtually any environment.
Some of the points the author makes may seem trivial at first (buy lots of tools, for example)as noted by at least one other reviewer. But if you take the time to read and understand what he's saying, you'll see there is some interesting and really decent advice here. Buying special purpose tools rather than the 6-in-1 kind, for example, not only produces better work, but helps avoid time consuming setups and reduces bad parts.
I've got a suggestion for the author for another book. He might organize it by "how to" topic. For example, "how to cut an interior keyway". There are lots of ways to do most of these things, ranging from simple hand tool methods to megacredit special purpose machinery. It would be interesting (for me at least) to see 4 to 5 ways presented for each "how to" with a brief discussion of their pluses and minuses.
Machine Shop Trade Secrets: A Guide to Manufacturing Machine Shop Practices OverviewYou will discover ways to:

Work faster.
Select, make, and grind cutters.
Surface grind blocks, pins and shapes
Cut threads, knurl parts and eliminate warp.
Choose realistic feeds, speeds and depths of cut.
Remove broken taps, drill bits and other hardware.
Apply proven CNC techniques to maximize output.
Improve surface finishes and hold tighter tolerances
Assist engineers with design and manufacturing issues.
Improve indicating skills and develop a 'feel" for machining.
