Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication Book ReviewIf you think this book is about creating geometric solids from sheet metal, or how to mark out a cone and fold it to shape, or the basic principles of sheet metal work, then think again. It is about one man's project of recreating an old car from sheet metal and the tools and methods he used to achieve this goal. There is nothing in this book that would assist the beginner metal worker to build even a simple tool box. I purchased this book in the belief (silly me) that it would contain information that would assist me fold, bend and shape sheet metal into basic everyday things like tool boxes, box trailers, pipe bending etc. This book is more for the advanced automotive body builder who specialises in the restoration of old cars, hot rods and customising autos.A more suitable title for this book would be "Automotive Sheet Metal Fabrication", which would not be so misleading to the web browser. This book was purchased on title alone as there were no prior book reviews to assist identify its contents and assist in the selection. If I was into auto restoration this would be a handy book to have and would rate it a 3 for content, but I understood this book to be a manual to assist the everyday metal worker in his/her work. No references to using a pan brake folder when bending,no projects to test the newly acquired skills and nothing on developing and making various geometric shapes from sheet metal. Well, we live and learn from our mistakes and if I knew the real content of this book I would not have bought it. Kind regards Uncle Bob.Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication Book OverviewDevelop the skills you need to build your own sheet metal parts! Tool & Cutter Sharpening (Workshop Practice) ReviewThis book is aimed at the home workshop metal worker, who does not have access to sophisticated sharpening machinery, and likes to make his/her own jigs and devices.
The writing is clear and understandable, as one would expect from an author who regularly contributes to metal working magazines.
The print, photographs and drawings are smallish, but this 132 page book has a surprisingly large amount of information considering its size.
The plans and instructions are very clear, well explained, and complete. What's more, having made the advanced grinding rest referred to in this book, and detailed in his book "Milling.. A Complete Course", I can confirm that his designs are beautifully engineered, achievable by an interested amateur, and function very well.
There is information on:
sharpening drill bits, lathe tools, screw divers, end mills, slot mills, dovetail bits, wood working tools etc.,
plans and instructions for jigs, rests and other devices;
Recommended.
Tool & Cutter Sharpening (Workshop Practice) OverviewSharpening workshop tools is probably the most diverse of all workshop activities and the one that is least understood by the majority of workshop owners. This is not unreasonable in view of the wide range of equipment suggested for the task, ranging from the complex (typically an industrial tool and cutter grinder) through to the humble off hand grinder. This book illustrates how most sharpening tasks can be carried out using an off hand grinder and a few simply made accessories to a standard comparable to that achieved using much more sophisticated equipment. Follow the instructions in this book and working with blunt tools will be a thing of the past! "The Workshop Practice Series" is the world's leading range of books for model engineers and mechanical crafts: some of the books have been in print for 50 years; most of them still reprint every 18 months. It is fully illustrated step-by-step with photographs and technical drawings.

The Complete Bladesmith: Forging Your Way To Perfection ReviewJim Hrisoulas has let out information some knifemakers refuse to share, and he is big enough to handle the criticism. He not only knows how to create beautiful knives and swords, he also knows how to write, so the novice to experienced knifemaker can comprehend the content. He also provides excellent diagrams of the subject matter he is addressing at the time. From the steels, tools, and techniques, to some trade secrets, it is all here. For the novice to experienced knifemaker, there is something for you to discover. The forging basics are spelled out in a clear and concise format. Most anything that has to do with the forging of blades is covered thoroughly in this volume. This book is a must for the wannna-be knifemaker. Jim also has two other books in print, "The Master Bladesmith", (Advanced Studies in Steel); and, "The Pattern Welded Blade", (Artistry in Iron). I have all three volumes, and most other knifemaking books in print, the other books being superfluous in contrast. All three volumes are a must for the serious forger of the steel blade, and should be required reading. What an addition to a starving subject matter, not to mention an attractive classic collection of works in the field. These books are really upscale in content in comparison. Why did I give the book a 9 rating if it is so good? You really need all three to have the best, a 10+. Warning: These books are not for the knifemakers that use the stock-removal method for knifemaking, although there is information that any knifemaker would like to read and use, it just may not pay to buy them. I have no personal bias here, as I do both methods. I would be happy to give my opinion of content regarding the other two books. Did someone say light the forge? How to Chop Tops (Old Skool Skills) ReviewI enjoyed learning the basics from this book as I approach my first chop on a model A.How to Chop Tops (Old Skool Skills) Overview
Chopping a top is an essential part of building a hot rod. The planning, the preparation, the actual cutting, and then the reassembly, each step must be completed correctly or the entire project will be in jeopardy. This book gives the reader six, start-to-finish; top chops that show each step in the process, from paper sketches to the final welding. Readers can use the examples shown in the book to perform their own chop – while avoiding the mistakes that first-time builders often make.

This book contains more than photo sequences, and also includes interviews with professional hot rod builders who help to explain the fine points of cutting and welding. As they explain, careful planning, followed by cautious execution, can reduce the amount of work enormously, and ensure a positive outcome—a very cool hot rod with a chopped top.

Metal Fabricator's Handbook ReviewThis book, in a way, is for both the beginner and the professional. The author includes a lot of helpful information for the beginner. He starts with simple and complete description of all kinds of tools that are used in fabricating metal. He starts with hand tools, moves to power hand tools, and then ends with large equipment. In the next chapter the author describes the types of metals needed to fabricate reliable auto parts. That was a good chapter. After wards, there is a chapter for each, gas welding and electric welding. The following two chapters are about basic metal forming and hammer forming. Both of those chapters are good and give a basic understanding of how metal is shaped.
There are five more chapters about sheet metal add ons, roll bars, tanks, exhaust headers, and sheet metal interior. All of those chapters were a little hard for me to follow, but I think a professional would like those chapters.
In conclusion, I find this book very helpful for the beginner; however there is a lack of information about simple detailed projects and practices.Metal Fabricator's Handbook OverviewWinner of the prestigious Moto Award for "Best Technical How-to Book" in 1984, the METAL FABRICATOR'S HANDBOOK applies master metal craftsman Ron Fournier's unique metal fabricating skills--developed during years of building Indy cars, drag racers, stockers, custom show cars, and sports GT race cars. Covers MIG, TIG, arc- and gas-welding, fuel and oil tanks, exhaust headers, and much more.

Step-by-Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It ReviewThis book primarily covers making knives (mostly kitchen knives) by starting with thin plates of steel (HUGE bandsaw blades), cutting out a knife blank, and shaping the knife by grinding it. I personally far prefer forging a blade, which this author does not even touch on.
However, Mr. Boye does offer solid knowledge on grinding, heat treating, attaching handles and bolsters (all necessary skills no matter how you make knives)... and an extensive section on acid etching which I have yet to find equalled in any other knifemaking book I've read.
So while I may not care for Mr. Boye's chosen method of production, I recognize his pure artistic ability and am gratefull for his willingness to share his hard won knowledge.Step-by-Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It OverviewA knife is the most basic tool, and the average adult uses a knife almost every day.Yet there are very few individually made knives in existence, and few people who know how to make knives.Step by Step Knifemaking, by master knifemaker David Boye, is widely regarded as the classic on the art of handcrafted knives.Thorough, clear, detailed instructions guide the reader through each step in how to make a knife.Generously illustrated with photos and drawings on most pages, this book reads like a one-on-one workshop with a thoughtful teacher. The reader is led to discover the spiritual connection between himself and his work, to develop his sense of artistry, and to acquire practical skills for self-sufficiency.Completely self-taught, the author guides the beginning knifemaker through the thinking processes necessary to make a knife; inspires confidence in the reader to begin at his own skill level; and shows how it can be done on a financial shoestring.Topics covered include tools, setting up a shop, knife design, grinding, heat treating, polishing, sharpening, blade etching, sheath making, and more.Boye's outdoor knives, kitchen cutlery, and utility knives are functional and "peace-loving," and the chapter on etching designs into the blades is one of the few guides to this unique art in print. With over 175,000 copies in print, Step by Step Knifemaking has deeply moved thousands to involve themselves in this craft, and they constitute a visible portion of today's knifemakers. This book can impel the reader to a personally satisfying, alternative backyard career, making his own useful knife art. It is an enjoyable, indispensable reference for those wanting to learn knifemaking, become more self-reliant, or for anyone with an interest in the ancient craft of blades."Handmade knives are unique," writes David Boye, "reflecting the skills and personality of their maker. They impart a personal touch to what would be a cold impersonal item. Thus it is with a handmade knife, or a handmade article of any kind, that there is a subtle exchange of electromagnetic energy that is transferred from the heart and the hands of the craftsman to the heart of the person who sees and uses the handmade article. Hopefully, the product will be the embodiment and expression of love and beauty in a useful, sanitary, and safe cutting tool - a hint of a deeper, more profound spirit in the process of living."272 pages; 170 illustrations; 155 photographs.

Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, and Kilns ReviewFirst, the good news:
Michael Porter's book is one that has been sorely needed by those of us who are experimenting with building our own propane burners, furnaces, forges, and kilns. It is chock-full of detailed plans, with gorgeous, carefully executed pencil drawings showing the parts and assembly of each item. Full parts lists and construction details are provided. Mr. Porter also begins the book as he should, with an extensive chapter on safety. Several burner designs, along with plans for forges and metal and glass-melting furnaces follow. A nice chapter on brazing is included.
And now, the not-so-good news:
I have to admit to some surprise upon seeing all the five-star reviews here. Perhaps it's because it's so hard to find the kind of useful detail one uncovers in this book. (It's certainly been useful for me.)
Unfortunately, the book appears to be rushed to print without proofreading for spelling or grammar, and could surely use an editor's eye to improve its organization and consistency of style. Nearly every page contains an error. In many places sentences are missing one or two words, words are just plain wrong, measurements conflict, chemical formulae are wrong, typographical style changes from page to page, etc. Examples: a project requires "3 linear feet (or 42 inches)" of refractory insulation -- which one is correct? Hydrogen is wrongly listed as "H3" (with subscript [which I can't show here], but on other pages, some chemical formulae appear without subscripting).
There are also frequent cross-references to other chapters, and to a "Notes" appendix so long that one wonders if some of the material would be better placed in the original chapters, either as part of the text, or as footnotes on the citing page. All of which is to say that I found myself constantly bouncing about from page to page or crashing head-on into another outright error, making comprehension of the text unnecessarily challenging.
A revised and corrected edition would be most welcome.
Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, and Kilns Overview"Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, & Kilns" is ado-it-yourselfers dream book, showing beginners how to make highlyefficient gas burners inexpensively. These burners use simple gasaccelerators as their central operating principle. All that is neededis a $2 MIG tip and some plumbing parts. This eliminates the need fora blower to supply combustion air, allowing the burners to be built inany size. Burners are featured, which are small enough to be used fora jewelry torch or large enough to heat any ceramic kiln. Becausethese burners are both powerful and portable, they can be combinedwith low cost space age insulating materials and common containers tobuild light compact heating equipment. Also described is ablacksmith's forge that can be carried anywhere and stored under aworkbench; a portable metal melting furnace; a portable farrier'sforge; a portable glass furnace/glory hole; and a mobile hot-workstation that aids in combining several crafts. The burners andequipment provide an inexpensive way to get started in blacksmithing, foundry work, ceramics, or glasswork. General information and specificdesigns are given, enabling the craftsperson to build equipmenttailored to their own desires.

The Backyard Blacksmith: Traditional Techniques for the Modern Smith ReviewI have been to a blacksmithing rodeo or two and have seen most of the books intended for the beginner blacksmith. This one immediately jumps up to the top of my recommended list.
Ms. Sims is an artist and blacksmith who specializes in creating hand-forged functional ironwork. Her public art commissions include the Omaha Botanical Gardens in Nebraska, Lincoln Log State Historic Site in Illinois and Fordham University in New York. In additional to teaching blacksmithing classes and workshops, she has been a featured demonstrator for blacksmithing conferences throughout North America. She is the owner/operator of the Five Points Blacksmith Shop in Charleston, IL since 1993.
Folks, this is a get-your-hands dirty lady and in this book she shares her experience and expertise in the subject matter, but probably more importantly, has the ability to pass on just how it is done.
The Backyard Blacksmith will show you how, with some patience and working knowledge of metals, basic tools and techniques, blacksmithing can be easy to learn and a rewarding hobby. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges and handles and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such as letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.
In all over 20 projects are organized by difficulty level allowing new, novice or hobby blacksmiths to progress at their own pace and master/reinforce the skills they learned in earlier chapters.
The book is also sprinkled with safety and other tips and techniques.
If you are a beginning, hobby or want-a-bee blacksmith, this book should be read cover to cover several times.
