Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication Book ReviewIf you think this book is about creating geometric solids from sheet metal, or how to mark out a cone and fold it to shape, or the basic principles of sheet metal work, then think again. It is about one man's project of recreating an old car from sheet metal and the tools and methods he used to achieve this goal. There is nothing in this book that would assist the beginner metal worker to build even a simple tool box. I purchased this book in the belief (silly me) that it would contain information that would assist me fold, bend and shape sheet metal into basic everyday things like tool boxes, box trailers, pipe bending etc. This book is more for the advanced automotive body builder who specialises in the restoration of old cars, hot rods and customising autos.A more suitable title for this book would be "Automotive Sheet Metal Fabrication", which would not be so misleading to the web browser. This book was purchased on title alone as there were no prior book reviews to assist identify its contents and assist in the selection. If I was into auto restoration this would be a handy book to have and would rate it a 3 for content, but I understood this book to be a manual to assist the everyday metal worker in his/her work. No references to using a pan brake folder when bending,no projects to test the newly acquired skills and nothing on developing and making various geometric shapes from sheet metal. Well, we live and learn from our mistakes and if I knew the real content of this book I would not have bought it. Kind regards Uncle Bob.Ultimate Sheet Metal Fabrication Book OverviewDevelop the skills you need to build your own sheet metal parts! Metal Fabricator's Handbook ReviewThis book, in a way, is for both the beginner and the professional. The author includes a lot of helpful information for the beginner. He starts with simple and complete description of all kinds of tools that are used in fabricating metal. He starts with hand tools, moves to power hand tools, and then ends with large equipment. In the next chapter the author describes the types of metals needed to fabricate reliable auto parts. That was a good chapter. After wards, there is a chapter for each, gas welding and electric welding. The following two chapters are about basic metal forming and hammer forming. Both of those chapters are good and give a basic understanding of how metal is shaped.
There are five more chapters about sheet metal add ons, roll bars, tanks, exhaust headers, and sheet metal interior. All of those chapters were a little hard for me to follow, but I think a professional would like those chapters.
In conclusion, I find this book very helpful for the beginner; however there is a lack of information about simple detailed projects and practices.Metal Fabricator's Handbook OverviewWinner of the prestigious Moto Award for "Best Technical How-to Book" in 1984, the METAL FABRICATOR'S HANDBOOK applies master metal craftsman Ron Fournier's unique metal fabricating skills--developed during years of building Indy cars, drag racers, stockers, custom show cars, and sports GT race cars.
