Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace ReviewThis book deserves more than five stars.
Although I have read many excellent books about nurturing creativity and working creatively in companies, this is the first book I have read where the author has been someone who has done that repeatedly and in a variety of ways. That perspective is uniquely valuable both to those who want to have more creative jobs and those who would like to encourage creativity.
Although the analogies seem far-fetched at first (orbiting the giant hairball means taking a creative tangent and refocusing it to have relevance for the company's purpose), they serve to open your mind to thinking differently about creativity and organizations.
Although the author's key points are not summarized anywhere in the book, you will begin to get a sense of how the ideas connect together. That's useful, because otherwise why should he try to teach us so much? Except in the chapter that deals with them, any of the key observations would have been enough for a whole book on the subject. The overall theme is that our minds are subject to being too quickly anesthetized, rather than stimulated to ground-breaking insights. You'll love the story about hypnotizing hens where he introduces that concept.
One of my favorite stories in the book described when the author was asked to create an introductory course on creativity. The first session was wildly successful. The author then analyzed why it worked and created a more organized version of this course (called Grope). That sesssion didn't work as well. Then he went back to being unstructured (operating at the edge of chaos), and the course worked again. He learned from this the delicate connection between groping and rote. You need more of the former and less of the latter.
Another of my favorite stories related to the joy he experienced when he first started parachuting. But within six months, it was getting to be boring. He could only make it more exciting by taking the parachute off, but that would be suicide. On the other hand, if he never tried something new, he would be vegatating. So we want to stay somewhere between suicide and vegetation for the most effective results.
You will enjoy reading this book because it presents a fresh perspective that will stay with you. The successful point of entry is a story about children. When the author shows children about making sculpture from sheets of steel, he asks them if they are creative. All first graders raise their hands. By sixth grade, no one will say that they are creative. The pressure to be like everyone else makes the creative people want to hide. It just gets worse from there. Everyone who reads that story will remember experiences from childhood where their creativity was actively discouraged by teachers, parents, neighbors and classmates. Such a pity!
Each story is imaginatively illustrated to help you get a sense of a different reality. It also makes the material more accessible to people of all ages.
In addition to reading and changing your own behavior, this book should be shared with young people to reinforce the idea that it is desirable to be creative. This would be a good book to discuss with your coworkers, as well.
Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace OverviewCreativity is crucial to business success. But too often, even the most innovative organization quickly becomes a "giant hairball"--a tangled, impenetrable mass of rules, traditions, and systems, all based on what worked in the past--that exercises an inexorable pull into mediocrity. Gordon McKenzie worked at Hallmark Cards for thirty years, many of which he spent inspiring his colleagues to slip the bonds of Corporate Normalcy and rise to orbit--to a mode of dreaming, daring and doing above and beyond the rubber-stamp confines of the administrative mind-set. In his deeply funny book, exuberantly illustrated in full color, he shares the story of his own professional evolution, together with lessons on awakening and fostering creative genius. Originally self-published and already a business "cult classic", this personally empowering and entertaining look at the intersection between human creativity and the bottom line is now widely available to bookstores. It will be a must-read for any manager looking for new ways to invigorate employees, and any professional who wants to achieve his or her best, most self-expressive, most creative and fulfilling work.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Volume I (The Study of the Structure of Subjective Experience) ReviewEver wonder how people do things with their personal strategies? Robert Dilts crafts a great book about the different strategies and meta-strategies in learning and beyond. The beginning neuro linguistic programmer will learn about the different representational systems: auditory, visual, kinesthetic, gustatory and olfactory. How do people run their motivational or inspirational strategies for example ? One may imagine learning something quite useful for figuring out the lock in someone's personality. Elegant book for trainers who have to convince or train people with new material. Learn about how to discover people's strategies with this book. It's very logical and very scientific. Not a book for intuitive types! This is pure research and useful strategy about strategies in the world of neuro linguistic programming. Ever wonder how successful people become successful people? Here's the toolbox!Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Volume I (The Study of the Structure of Subjective Experience) OverviewThere comes a time when it is both useful, and appropriate, for the purpose of continuing to expand our understanding of the universe we live in, for entirely new fields of study to be created. Separating new from old, exceptions from rules, and useful from previously unquestionable. So learning and experiences from entirely divergent fields have the opportunity to combine knowledge and experience into configurations that allow further growth, understanding, and impact upon ourselves as a species. It is in this way that neuro-linguistic programming came into being. We wish at this point to separate our NLP from the many fields from which it draws information, from the many fields for which it has application. And in this way have greater clarity and freedom to delineate NLP's own methodologies and basic purpose.

The Sourcebook of Magic ReviewThis is not a book for beginners in NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) in spite of the two excellent introductory chapters. You need to have at least worked through "The User's Manual for the Brain" or the NLP Practitioner's Level to fully appreciate its value. 77 central NLP patterns have been collected here and grouped under different categories. Each pattern is prefaced with a clear and incisive explanation of the concept. Often you get illuminating gems. For example, a brief note on #38 The Submodality Overlapping Pattern, saying that "...The Judeo-Christian scriptures provide a great example of this." helps one to perceive such NLP patterns in daily life, literature and movies. The patterns are not mere technqiues for change. They are part of the texture and colours of life. Mastering them enriches the art of living. The book does give a fairly comprehensive and up-to-date coverage. 51 meta-programs (from Hall's Figuring Out People) are summarised here. You also get a more developed understanding of the Meta-model presented with Hall's mastery of linguistics (Cf. Hall's The Secret of Magic). Chapter 12 on "Figuring Out What Magic To Do At What Times" is a key question that all NLP practitioners want to ask. Ch. 13 gives brief clues on using NLP in business, education, therapy, sports, health relationships, etc. What will fascinate people is to note that the whole book was written in E-Prime, i.e., without the verb "to be"! Read Appendix C: There "Is" No "Is". Since NLP deals with mental "maps" rather than the "territory", identity or reality, such language creates more options and possibilities. (However, for those interested in fundamental issues in epistemology, it might be worthwhile to explore Bernard Lonergan's monumental "Insight" or Philip McShane's "A History of Tongue".) All NLP practitioners can benefit from such a handy and informative reference, at such a reasonable price. [Please note that the book was first published in 1999, reprinted in 2000. It has 312 pp. Quite a few books in the Amazon catalogue contain inaccuracies with regard to publication dates and number of pages.]The Sourcebook of Magic OverviewAn encyclopaedic resource for everyone wishing to gain an understanding ofhow to "do NLP" effectively, both on themselves and with others. The book is divided intothree parts covering:an introduction to NLP and its underlying model and strategies; theseventy-seven main change patterns of NLP; the application of the patterns with specificreference to NLP in education, business, therapy, sports, health and relationships. This is thefirst book to bring together all NLP technology and to describe the individual patterns indetail whilst providing guidance as to their use. A really practical book, truly acomprehensive resource, from this prolific NLP author, Michael Hall, ably supported here bynew co-author Barbara Belnap.

Sourcebook of Magic: A Comprehensive Guide to NLP Change Patterns ReviewThose of you who missed the 1st edition of this excellent book, there is now a second chance to pick up this modern classic.
The premise of the work is that many NLP books are available that contain, within extensive "padding", only a few patterns, some books just one or two. Hall achieves his goal of separating the wheat from the chaff admirably with all the objectivity of a Haynes car manual leaving this pragmatic work refreshingly academic yet accessible. Like a cookbook it is reference driven allowing the practitioner access to these powerful patterns without the contingency of having to wade into battle against the author's literary aspirations.
What are these patterns?
Most of these patterns are primarily action orientated, simple exercises to be run through step by step with regard to specific ends. The other few are, more fundamentally, explanations of NLP assumptions, such as the principle of well formed outcomes.
Hall begins by introducing the reader to an overview of NLP and levels-of-processing that is indispensable, as within the instructions to the patterns he falls back on a few technical concepts with out further explanation, such as "test and future pace".
Then we come the patterns themselves, organised roughly according to their level of processing, the book allows you to easily select a pattern for your goal. Included patterns are; collapsing anchors, resolving internal conflict, chaining states, becoming intentionally compelled, responding to criticism, healthy eating, spinning icons.....
The second edition adds to the first; some simplification of the procedures and a little more detail as to the cognitive / behavioural mechanisms used in the patterns, and a deserved revision of the introduction. In the first (and second) edition Hall asserts that there may be as many as 200 distinct patterns and surely some that haven't been invented (or should that be discovered?) yet. So I was expecting some new patterns in the 2nd ed. but it's the original 77.
I don't know how I would start to define the distinction of a unique pattern (as opposed to a variant) anyway. I find it unlikely that at a computational - cognitive level there are 200 modes of action, so it's safe to assume the all of the building blocks are here for you. Hall hints that, a list of patterns touted as "exhaustive", would promote dogma and stagnate inventive development, through his legitimate assertion that all the patterns are largely prototypical and are easily extended and adapted.
Without being overly complex, this book is dense.Sourcebook of Magic: A Comprehensive Guide to NLP Change Patterns OverviewThis edition streamlines the patterns so that they are even more succinct and offers new insights about how the patterns work, that is, the cognitive-behavioral mechanisms that make the neuro-linguistic and neuro-semantic approach so powerful.

The Backyard Blacksmith: Traditional Techniques for the Modern Smith ReviewI have been to a blacksmithing rodeo or two and have seen most of the books intended for the beginner blacksmith. This one immediately jumps up to the top of my recommended list.
Ms. Sims is an artist and blacksmith who specializes in creating hand-forged functional ironwork. Her public art commissions include the Omaha Botanical Gardens in Nebraska, Lincoln Log State Historic Site in Illinois and Fordham University in New York. In additional to teaching blacksmithing classes and workshops, she has been a featured demonstrator for blacksmithing conferences throughout North America. She is the owner/operator of the Five Points Blacksmith Shop in Charleston, IL since 1993.
Folks, this is a get-your-hands dirty lady and in this book she shares her experience and expertise in the subject matter, but probably more importantly, has the ability to pass on just how it is done.
The Backyard Blacksmith will show you how, with some patience and working knowledge of metals, basic tools and techniques, blacksmithing can be easy to learn and a rewarding hobby. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges and handles and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such as letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.
In all over 20 projects are organized by difficulty level allowing new, novice or hobby blacksmiths to progress at their own pace and master/reinforce the skills they learned in earlier chapters.
The book is also sprinkled with safety and other tips and techniques.
If you are a beginning, hobby or want-a-bee blacksmith, this book should be read cover to cover several times.
Ken Scharabok, Poor Boy Blacksmith Tools
The Backyard Blacksmith: Traditional Techniques for the Modern Smith OverviewThe Backyard Blacksmith takes the mystery out of blacksmithing, but not the magic...There is an increasing interest and revival in the art of blacksmithing as a hobby and art, and both men and women are becoming at-home blacksmiths. Blacksmithing is a simple, rewarding craft anyone can enjoy in their backyard or home workshop -- even beginners can produce useful and beautiful projects on their first try.The Backyard Blacksmith shows you how blacksmithing can be easy to learn, and a rewarding hobby, with some patience and a working knowledge of metals, basic tools, and techniques. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges, and handles, and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.

Reframing: Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Transformation of Meaning ReviewReframing is the art of shifting meaning. Bandler and Grinder put their attention on using communication, verbal and non-verbal, to shift meaning in their client's models of the world. An emphasis is on using language and language patterns. In this regard they succeed admirably. However, where I think they go off track is in their descriptions of "parts" and what they call 6-step reframing, even one of the authors - Richard Bandler says he doesn't do this anymore. I agree and add that it introduces fractionation and fragmentation in clients which isn't useful or suggested. This has bred a continuing controversy in the NLP(tm) community of professionals. Some still use the "parts" model and some are beginning to move away from it in favor of more integral and wholistic methods. There are other books that do a better job of presenting reframing and utilzation of language patterns, but with this caveat in place I recommend the book to anyone seeking to deepen and widen their knowledge of the NLP(tm) model. If you want to go further in understanding where the model has gone since the authors wrote this book try some of the later books, especially "Time for a Change" by Richard Bandler and "Persuasion Engineering" by Richard Bandler with John LaValle. Both of these present the new forms of hypnotic language usage quite well within a more integrated model.Reframing: Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Transformation of Meaning Overview
